I don't know if anybody at his age could live up to what he used to do 25 years ago. There is no doubt he isn't going to be quite the showman he was back in the group's prime.
As far as his voice goes, it realistically probably won't be what it once was and I am OK with that. Mainly because I have yet to find see "older" singer who truly measures up to their prime (in terms of live performance). I have seen groups like the Stones, Aerosmith, etc. playing live in recent years and they all slip a bit. Usually because their vocal endurance isn't what it once was and the recovery time from one show to the next takes longer. Maybe they compensate by conserving energy on stage, etc.
I have seen comments from people who were actually there (not just judging on a few less than ideal sounding clips) and they were pretty positive about it. And the way I look at it, even if there is a bit of "slippage", those old VH songs at 80% are still better than just about everything that comes out today at 100%.
Some of those songs have had dust on them for too long.
Nobody expects the mid-air splits and jump kicks, but he better be able to do more than shuffle around and shake maracas...![]()
Geddy Lee, Ronnie James Dio, Rob Halford (Judas Priest), Geoff Tate (Queensryche), are just a few of the many performers I've seen recently that have nailed songs from twenty-five years ago with aplomb. I'm not sure DLR took enough care of his voice to have anything left at 52...![]()
Paint it however you'd like, he needs to improve by quite a bit to get VH to that 80% marker.![]()
On the brightside, I thought Wolfie was fine, his backing vox were even decent.
So, are you saying that DLR, is the musical equivalent of Torii Hunter?
No, but I wouldn't pay either of them their current asking price either!![]()
Gimme a rimshot, I'm hot today!

Yeah but you only saw him in person... not on You Tube!

I don't need to see a You Tube clip of the 1984 tour performance. I saw it in person.

During the solo for Stairway I thought Jimmy was going to crap himself.
Oh, you were overseas?
Slap Shot wrote:I don't care about 34's supposed musical credentials, but my musical tastes are not loose, I've witnessed easily more than 400 live shows in my time and I know a good live act when I see one. I don't need to DLR to be DLR 1984, but having just seen him I can vouch that he put on an excellent show. He told numerous stories, talked to the crowd between nearly every song, poked fun at himself (heck when he was at the State Fair several years back he told dirty stories just so he could see what the signer was having to do), he had a blast and so did the crowd. Even at his age he's still an entertainer in the truest sense of the word.

To tide us over ACDC is releasing "Plug me in" this Tuesday, a 2 DVD (3 for early birds) of live material from both the Bon Scott and Brian Johnson era's, looks like a great collection.

The show was indeed worth $150 a pop (along with a $35 t-shirt).

Other than Eddie's playing, there is not much that seperates them from Kiss. Both are loud bands with good energy and plenty of machismo who write songs that are, at best, catchy and at worst dopey.
I consider Aeromsith to be the best of the American rock bands. Oh yeah, they can dopey, but they play a more compelling range of tunes.

I got 14/15. I only missed the one where it is asked who they wanted before Gary Cherone. I guess I try to forget that time in the band's history.
hobey_baker wrote:Thirty-Four,
I guess I look at VH as being a tad over-rated because I've kind of moved on from the 80s genre that they obviously influenced.
Today I broke out a burned CD I have of hits like Unchained and Jump with album tracks like Little Guitars and I'm the One. Damn, these guys are light years beyond Kiss. I forgot what a gunslinger Eddie can be. Probably because all I hear on the radio is Jump these days.
And Hammy, I have other bands I treasure, but by no means do I lump VH in with the trash.

In addition, the playlist will more than likely include these songs (he plays them the majority of the time):
Badlands
Dancing In The Dark
Girls in Their Summer Clothes
Livin' In The Future
Lonesome Day
Magic
Reason To Believe
Thundercrack
His encore usually consists of Girls In Their Summer Clothes, Thundercrack, Born To Run, Dancing In The Dark, and American Land
He usually adds one or two songs to the playlist that he hasn't performed on the tour as yet. I'm hoping Rosalita is one of those songs Friday night!!
Looking forward to a great concert.

They played pretty much every song I wanted to hear, threw in a 45-min ‘accoustic’ set on the opposite end of the floor and the sound was great. Best part was when they walked off stage for the encore, they did this camera thing where they panned real close on Grohl and was basically saying to the crowd (there was no sound) «Should we play another song ? » and of course the crowed was asking for more than just one. He’d come back and gesture OK, just one and the crowd again demanded more. Then the drummer pushed him aside and said they’d play 10 and Grohl jumped back in with a faux panic look on his face and said they’d play 2, the crowd said MORE and they came out and played 3 for the encore. Hard to describe but it was quite humorous.

I was there the whole concert. The first opener, Against Me, I think was the name, was AWESOME, I was very very impressed. Serj was god awful, I couldn't wait for him to get done. The acoustic part was totally cool when they dropped the stage down into the middle from the ceiling. Agreed on the encore thing, playing 3 songs was a nice surprise. Humorous and fulfilling
THE FOO FIGHTERS WERE AMAZING!!
