And as I noted earlier, I just saw DLR last year. He was in top form and he and his band nailed all the VH songs - which is all they played!

As far as his voice goes, it realistically probably won't be what it once was and I am OK with that. Mainly because I have yet to find see "older" singer who truly measures up to their prime (in terms of live performance). I have seen groups like the Stones, Aerosmith, etc. playing live in recent years and they all slip a bit. Usually because their vocal endurance isn't what it once was and the recovery time from one show to the next takes longer. Maybe they compensate by conserving energy on stage, etc.

I have seen comments from people who were actually there (not just judging on a few less than ideal sounding clips) and they were pretty positive about it. And the way I look at it, even if there is a bit of "slippage", those old VH songs at 80% are still better than just about everything that comes out today at 100%.

Some of those songs have had dust on them for too long.

Nobody expects the mid-air splits and jump kicks, but he better be able to do more than shuffle around and shake maracas...

Geddy Lee, Ronnie James Dio, Rob Halford (Judas Priest), Geoff Tate (Queensryche), are just a few of the many performers I've seen recently that have nailed songs from twenty-five years ago with aplomb. I'm not sure DLR took enough care of his voice to have anything left at 52... :(

Paint it however you'd like, he needs to improve by quite a bit to get VH to that 80% marker.

On the brightside, I thought Wolfie was fine, his backing vox were even decent.

So, are you saying that DLR, is the musical equivalent of Torii Hunter?

No, but I wouldn't pay either of them their current asking price either!

Gimme a rimshot, I'm hot today!
:rotflmao:

I have to get an assist for that though....

Oh, golly - I am hot today!

Genius

Here is some classic VH from the 1984 tour, smart guy. DLR should be able to do now what he does in this clip (aside from the high kicks), no?

Hey, it is only fair to point out that you are criticizing based on something that won't measure up to what it is like when you are actually there. If you can't handle that fact, maybe you shouldn't critique it?

I don't need to see a You Tube clip of the 1984 tour performance. I saw it in person.

Oh, you were overseas? :evil_laugh:

As far as my critical abilities, I've been paid as a drummer for over fifteen years and have could have pursued a career in that field if I'd have chosen to, so I understand.

Look, check out the Live Aid travasty that Led Zeppelin crapped out 7-13-85, :giggle: people hungry enough for this reunion will take whatever they can get, that don't make it good. DLR was never a "voice guy" like a Dio, Dickinson, Halford, etc, he is about attitude and showmanship first, voice second. In these clips, all I see is attitude.

I think I've got ya a little riled cuz ya see my point, Hammy!

:giggle:

But a friend of mine thought that was a good performance... she's an idiot... j/k  but it goes to show that for some folks, just being there and seeing the band is enough. Those folks shouldn't bother listening to any critic of a band they plan to see. They will be satisfied regardless, and that's... ok.

I was on the other side of town to see them... not the other side of the world.

Riled up? On this? Nah. Just pointing out that getting too critical based solely on a few less than ideal clips isn't quite being an authority on it when others who were there made much more positive remarks (not to mention Slap Shot's opinion of DLR's recent vocal performance). Just think it is a tad much to act like an opinion based on a few clips holds more water than in person experiences.

No doubt that DLR is a loose cannon and he will never be confused with a great vocal guy (a la Halford). But a VH concert was never about showcasing his vocals anyway. It was more about the overall musical vibe and Eddie's abilities. Any educated VH fan would already know that heading into one of their shows. I think their success without DLR should highlight that fact (not that Hagar didn't have a hand in that continued success too).

I am sure there will be critics of their performances. It comes with the territory on that level. But usually the general fan consensus is what matters.

I don't care about 34's supposed musical credentials, but my musical tastes are not loose, I've witnessed easily more than 400 live shows in my time and I know a good live act when I see one. I don't need to DLR to be DLR 1984, but having just seen him I can vouch that he put on an excellent show. He told numerous stories, talked to the crowd between nearly every song, poked fun at himself (heck when he was at the State Fair several years back he told dirty stories just so he could see what the signer was having to do), he had a blast and so did the crowd. Even at his age he's still an entertainer in the truest sense of the word.

Ok now we've had a Sammy reunion in '04, a DLR reunion in '07 how bout a Gary Cherone reunion in '10.

All joking aside, I think it will still be an entertaining concert, and that is what I go for. If I were to be interested in note for note perfection I would never have become such a Zeppelin fan. I go to be entertained, and I think this version of Van Halen can bring on the entertainment value.

As for DLR, listen to the 1984 boots, he was never an exceptional singer, and I don't expect him to be now, when I watched the clips from the rehersal show at the forum, they don't seem to be much worse than 1984 in Montreal. His higher register isn't there, But then again who's is? Even Rush tunes down arrangements for Geddy who can't hit those high notes anymore consistantly. That's what you get with aging rockers, maybe the fact I never saw them in their prime can be accounted as to why I am so forgiving.

The fact that we're talking about these bands 25 years (+) later says something about their entertainment & musical value. Think about how many bands can't sing in tune on their first tour - if they are even singing live. No band can match their youthful intensity when they are closer to medicare than anyone wants to admit.

If you're a "fan", then you'll get what you want out of it - unless they completely mail it in. If criticality of musicianship is what you're going for, then you're probably going to be disappointed no matter which front man shows up. :D
Get that lumber in his teeth. Let 'em know you're there! :nutz:

Like dust in the wind

Postby jamwall » Sat 9/22/07 3:10 pm

I live in Eagan. In my neighborhood is the annual Faithful Shepard Catholic School Septemberfest. It happens around the end of summer/beginning of fall. This years headliner is the group "Kansas."

Yes...those "dust in the wind" guys.

http://www.septemberfest.info/

The best part about the advertising of this event is the language on the website. It goes like this:

"Faithful Shepard Catholic School Presents:

SEPTEMBERFEST 2007 EAGAN!!

SCORE KANSAS TICKETS TODAY
APOLOGIZE TO THE BABYSITTER TOMORROW

....lock in the sitter (WTF?????), fire up the minivan (vrooooom....vrooommm), and unleash your "inner groupie (repressed soccer moms)" at summer's last, fall's first and the "Burbs" best annual music festival."

Actually this is a huge improvement on last years acts, Tim Mahoney and GB Leighton (who seems to appear at a lot of these kinds of events. They are the Jack Warden of local rock bands.)

P.S., love the eyepatch so close to "talk like a pirate day".....arrrrrr!

Saw Gordon Lightfoot on the shores of Gitchee Gumee tonight. Awesome concert. The strokes have took their toll on the man, but "Wreck of tEdmund Fitzgerald" and "If You Could Read My Mind" were both spot-on-orgasmic tonight. The packed crowd at tDECC got their money's worth from tLegend.

Anybody planning on seeing Neil Young at Northrop?? He's out promoting a new album, so at $67 a pop for a balcony seat... I think I'll pass. Neil's famous for playing deep cuts nobody's heard of at his live shows... think I'll stay home and put on Harvest that night

I'll admit I'm a HUGE Barry Manilow fan! I've seen him twice in concert...yes, TWICE...and I would rank BOTH of them up there in my list of "best concerts". And I've been to a lot of concerts in my day!!!

I'm not so sure about the venue, though, to be honest. The 2 times I've seen him were at smaller venues (Northrop and Orpheum). I'm not sure I'd like the show as much in the bigger setting?

As far as I know ACDC is still finishing up their newest album, once that is done you can bet a tour will be arranged. I'd definatly be going, Angus Young is what rock and roll is all about.

To tide us over ACDC is releasing "Plug me in" this Tuesday, a 2 DVD (3 for early birds) of live material from both the Bon Scott and Brian Johnson era's, looks like a great collection.

My buddy and I both entered the lottery for a chance to get tickets and neither of us got drawn.  Not that I could have really afforded it, but Zeppelin is his top band of all time, and he was pretty bummed. Oh well, there will continue to be rumors of a possible tour, blah blah blah. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I'll have to see what's on that one. I already have "Family Jewels" which is a great compilation; many early Bon performances.

I heart AC/DC, and you nailed it for the most part, because they show up, they rock, and then they are done. No "gimmicks" as we know them today (sure, they have the bell, and cannons), but it's just rock and roll with them. And NO BALLADS!

Just got back from VH at Target Center. Thirty-Four will be happy to know his doubts in terms of vocal performance, etc. were not an issue. The band was in very good form. DLR actually sounded better than I expected and Michael Anthony was not really missed when it came to backing vocals. The band was very much clicking and I didn't hear one bad thing all night. An excellent show.

I read reviews prior to this show that praised the performance of the band and I definitely agree with those reviews. The music was very good and DLR performed well. It was awesome to hear some old school VH again... and it was done very well.

I hope they stick together as it would be interesting to see what new stuff they could put together. :drunk:

Van Halen put on an outstanding show. They haven't lost a step. Diamond Dave is still a master showman and EVH is the consumate musician.

The show was indeed worth $150 a pop (along with a $35 t-shirt). 8)

You know, I'd never even THINK of paying more than $15 or so for a t-shirt. But get me at a concert, and I don't even blink at $35-40. Just an interesting observation.

The show was outstanding and every bit as good as I figured it would be based upon recent shows I've seen of DLR. Eddie was sick (of course and worth the admission price alone imho), Alex was on fire (his solo and progression into Unchained was insane), and Wolfgang didn't miss a beat. Outside of DLR forgetting the 3rd verse to one song (I think it was Everybody Wants Some and he made fun of himself for it) and losing a bit off his veritical he was great as well. My only disappointment was that he didn't spend as much time telling stories as he did when performing solo, but perhaps that was to appease the rest of the band.

But back to Eddie - everyone with a pulse that has listened to music the past 30 years is probably aware of how good he is, but I don't think you can fully appreciate the talent until you see him live. I'm not an accomplished guitar player but usually when I watch someone else play I can get a feel for what is they're doing to produce their notes. Yet when you watch Eddie play at times you say to yourself, "There's no way a guitar is making that music" because it's just off the charts amazing. And unlike last time when Van Hager came through, he wasn't sloppy but tight. Eruption sounded like Eruption is supposed to and he has the flair for rattling off the most incredible bits at the blink of an eye so seamlessly that it's as if it's as natural for him as breathing.

That show was worth all 11,100 pennies I spent.

Great reviews on VH guys....looks like next time I'll have to catch them. Of course last night I might have been screwed since I had come down with a mild case of 24 hour Ebola :puke:

Glad all you fans enjoyed the show. I enjoy a great deal of their music, but overall I find VH, in any of its forms, to be a tad over-rated.

Other than Eddie's playing, there is not much that seperates them from Kiss. Both are loud bands with good energy and plenty of machismo who write songs that are, at best, catchy and at worst dopey.

I consider Aeromsith to be the best of the American rock bands. Oh yeah, they can dopey, but they play a more compelling range of tunes.

I agree on Aerosmith, Steven Tyler has the kind of range that I'd kill for.

The problem with the Kiss comparison is that they really didn't "invent" anything. They updated Alice Cooper's stage "events" and incorporated a circus-like atmosphere and are a decent group of musicians. Van Halen, however, created a template that has been copied by almost every hard rock band since: Flashy lead guitar player (with finger-tapping as a necessity), A brash, outlandish frontman expected to physically perform as well as vocally perform (with vocal talent being second to looks and physicality, see Ratt, Motley Crue, Bullet Boys, Def Lepard, on and on)...

Oh, and Alex Van Halen is one of the best drummers on the planet, if Eddie weren't his brother (Second in my mind to only Hendrix in overall ability and innovation) he'd get a lot more respect. Try playing "Hot for Teacher" sometime!

15 out of 15! I'm way too good at knowing otherwise useless information.

The show last night was well worth the $85 I spent for a ticket. Also well worth the cash were the earplugs I bought at Guitar Center before the concert. I'm sure somebody here knows what I'm talking about, but these babies have a hole/tube thing happening that blocks the crazy loudness of a concert without eliminating the sound of the notes. The music sounded clear and awesome, and I could hear afterwards! Good stuff!

Thirty-Four,

I guess I look at VH as being a tad over-rated because I've kind of moved on from the 80s genre that they obviously influenced.

Today I broke out a burned CD I have of hits like Unchained and Jump with album tracks like Little Guitars and I'm the One. Damn, these guys are light years beyond Kiss. I forgot what a gunslinger Eddie can be. Probably because all I hear on the radio is Jump these days.

And Hammy, I have other bands I treasure, but by no means do I lump VH in with the trash.

Fair enough.

The one place I think Aerosmith really takes Van Halen out at the knees is the timelessness of their music. I am a bigger VH fan, but their music has not aged as well as classic Aerosmith.

For me VHI still resonates today as strongly as it did when it came out and when I listen to Runnin With the Devil, Eruption, Atomic Punk, Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love etc. they don't sound dated at all. But that's the beauty of music - to each their own. :)

Thirty-four

In regards to timeless music, as a decade itself I find that 80's music is generally more apt to be disposable than music from the 70's. I am a huge Van Halen fan, But when I only have time for a quick couple songs I am always going for my Aerosmith, Zeppelin, Who or Floyd.

The trend toward image being as important as music began in the 70's, however it really went over the top in the mid 80's, and look what it has spiralled into when it comes to today's new music scene. Some of these bands and singers, I'm not even aware of any of their work, yet I read about them everyday because of their "clothing and make-up mix ups" while in line at the supermarket.

Bruce Springsteen

Postby Aldy » Thu 11/01/07 5:00 pm

For those going to the Springsteen concert Friday night, the playlist will include the following songs:

American Land
Born to Run
Devil's Arcade
Gypsy Biker
Last to Die
Long Walk Home
She's The One
The Promised Land
The Rising

In addition, the playlist will more than likely include these songs (he plays them the majority of the time):

Badlands
Dancing In The Dark
Girls in Their Summer Clothes
Livin' In The Future
Lonesome Day
Magic
Reason To Believe
Thundercrack

His encore usually consists of Girls In Their Summer Clothes, Thundercrack, Born To Run, Dancing In The Dark, and American Land

He usually adds one or two songs to the playlist that he hasn't performed on the tour as yet. I'm hoping Rosalita is one of those songs Friday night!!

Looking forward to a great concert. :D

No, just once - the songs have been played as part of the encore but have been included in every playlist.

Jungleland would make my evening as well, but he performed Jungleland a couple of weeks ago in New York (the only time on the tour) so I'm not getting my hopes up. :( However, The River is a possibility!! :D

My buddy and I fell into two free tickets club level behind the stage at about 5:30 Friday night. Unbelievable concert, I can't believe he's 58 years old. Born To Run, Dancing in the Dark, and American Land to end the show. Words cannot describe how awesome that night was.

To anyone who hasnt seen a Trans-Siberian Orchestra show: GO!!!!

That simply was one of the best shows/concerts I have been too. And this is coming from a guy who likes Tool, metallica, etc. My dad went with me and also loved it.

Question though, not complaining, I thought indoor pyrotechnics were banned since the Great White incident... TSO certianly had quite a large number of fireworks and fire balls that were pretty cool!

Last night I went to Target Center after the 6AA game. I heard Serj was terrible (didn’t see him though to verify) but Foo Fighters were awesome. They played pretty much every song I wanted to hear, threw in a 45-min ‘accoustic’ set on the opposite end of the floor and the sound was great. Best part was when they walked off stage for the encore, they did this camera thing where they panned real close on Grohl and was basically saying to the crowd (there was no sound) «Should we play another song ? » and of course the crowed was asking for more than just one. He’d come back and gesture OK, just one and the crowd again demanded more. Then the drummer pushed him aside and said they’d play 10 and Grohl jumped back in with a faux panic look on his face and said they’d play 2, the crowd said MORE and they came out and played 3 for the encore. Hard to describe but it was quite humorous.

I was there the whole concert. The first opener, Against Me, I think was the name, was AWESOME, I was very very impressed. Serj was god awful, I couldn't wait for him to get done. The acoustic part was totally cool when they dropped the stage down into the middle from the ceiling. Agreed on the encore thing, playing 3 songs was a nice surprise. Humorous and fulfilling
