Grant's son?
Another defenseman? Good grief, that's going to be a loaded d-corps!

The earliest he could come in would be 2013, so that leaves potentially:
Seniors (5)
Mark Alt, Justin Holl, Jake Parenteau, Nate Schmidt, Chris Student

Juniors (2)
Ben Marshall, Blake Thompson

Sophomores (2)
Mike Reilly, Brady Skjei

Freshmen (2)
Jake Bischoff, Johnny Brodzinski

Am I missing anyone?
Granted, some of those may not be here anymore, but I count eleven defensemen on that team.
I'm assuming, he'd come in 2014, right? Could we see a situation where there are zero freshmen defensmen in 2013? Talk about a young d-corps we currently have.

It is unlikely Alt, Holl and Schmidt will all stick around for 4 years. The way Marshall is playing he could bolt after year two. Better to be prpared. You don't want to get caught short of d men. Student could be moved to forward if they have too many d men.

Guentzel had been up at GR earlier in the week so it isn't a big surprise. Bischoff was going to be a Gopher. It was just a matter of when. My suspicion is he'll be a flex recruit to come in either 2013 or 2014 depending on need. Very good pickup.

Here is Jason's article on it:

http://www.grandrapidsmn.com/sports/art ... 963f4.html

Mentions his final three being Gophers, UMD, and Notre Dame. I don't think there was much doubt it was going to be the Gophers though.

With all of the D-men we have now, including commits, is it safe to assume Bischoff is an absolute top teir talent defenseman? I mean does he have that potential? I would be surprised if the Gophers are offering scholarships to defenseman that don't look to be in that Ballard, Leopold, Martin, Goligoski level when they have the luxury of being able to wait for that gem to appear.

I do like these Bischoff, Nanne, Letierri kids coming in if for nothing else they will know what it means to wear the "M" and should appreciate it.

Reading the story and seeing that he's wanted to be part of the program his whole life reminded me of the photo Grant Potulny used to show of himself wearing his Gopher hat as a little kid. If Bischoff puts in half the effort of Grant I'd be happy.

Never thought of that. I didn't go to any games when I was 4 years old, so missed Nanne's years (I thought Nanne was early sixties, so how could you have seen him?) BOX?

There's something pretty funny in the story from the Grand Rapids paper too. It says that Jake grew up watching his dad play for the Gophers. :confused2: He must be one of the oldest high school juniors ever since Grant played for the Gophers from '88-91.

Jake must have a few old tapes from the KTIN days when Frank and Wally were doing the broadcasts.

I wouldn't grind on Marty too hard. Granted he didn't put up very much point wise but he worked pretty hard and wasn't afraid to stick his nose into the action. Pretty tough kid.

Not at all talking about expectations, just the type of players they were. I don't think most people had any expectations for Marty honestly. Anyways, back to commited recruits from this decade....... :)

Just to clarify, I was talking about expectations. I think it's an important context for these discussions. It's why we all love (or should love) Serratore so much.

I love this next generation trend. I'm very excited for 2013 and beyond.

DE Waseca (who was just DE back then) was a POI regular. He'd always use his one phrase after a kid committed. Can't recall exactly what it was though. Something like another one has chosen to wear the storied M or something to that effect.

This may belong more in the "dumb question" thread... but doesn't Herb Brooks have 2 grandsons (on his daughter's side) that would be right around the same age as Louie Nanne? Marty Nanne and Danny Brooks were in the same recruiting class IIRC, wondered if the same holds true for the next generation...

I agree with most of what you said; I'm just surprised there's another d-man bagged. Anyone remember recently when Leddy, Lofquist, and Scott all left within about a year and we had to go out and find a hidden gem like Parenteau? Or how about the summer of '07 when Vannelli graduates, E.J. and Goli go pro, we have to find a replacement for Hagemo, and a guy who likely would have been a d-man for much of the season (O'Brien) gets drafted and leaves for the WHL? I am a firm believer that you win with a dominant and deep defensive corps above anything else, so I am very happy with the potential rosters and combination. I'm bragging as much as anything else. :D

I've had to miss half of the games due solely to lack of television availability, but if Marshall is playing like the 'Wings could sign him in 2013, he must be playing out of his mind. I've said since he was drafted that in ten years, people will be looking at him as another seventh round steal like Datsyuk and Zetterberg. Maybe I'm shortchanging him in that regard.

Yeah the comparisons to Pavel Datsyuk or Henrik Zetterberg really aren't doing Ben Marshall any justice. Maybe more like Niklas Lidstrom or Bobby Orr...

Yeah the comparisons to Pavel Datsyuk or Henrik Zetterberg really aren't doing Ben Marshall any justice. Maybe more like Niklas Lidstrom or Bobby Orr...

The Wings are lucky. Once Lidstrom retires, Marshall can step right in and they won't miss a beat.

Hey guys hopefully I'm not going to interrupt the Ben Marshall comparisons to Lidstrom and Orr humor with this...

I recently was able to talk to Gopher commit Justin Kloos. He came across as a very humble and intelligent young man. There's likely no information in this piece that you Gopher diehards don't already know, but I figured I'd post it here anyway.

I should state for the record that I had my tongue firmly in cheek. The only thing more ludicrous that I have seen posted on this board, other than that which mentions Ben Marshall in the same sentence as Pavel Datsyuk, was Thirty Four stating that Patrick White was going to be a 1,000 point scorer in the NHL.

Admittedly Bischoff is one guy I don't know much about. What kind of player do we expect him to be? Is there a comparable player that comes to mind?

I've never seen him play, but I've heard from those who have that he has speed like his old man, has a big heart and is thrilled to play at the U. That's a good start.

He is a nice fluid skater, but I don't think he's a big speed guy like Grant was. Nice, solid player. I'm sure it will get a rise out of some here, but I think I see some of a Chris Harrington type in body type and skating.

Grand Rapids will be playing at Edina the next three nights, but Bischoff may not play. He apparently missed games in Roseau and Warroad last weekend and I haven't heard if he is healed enough to play this week or not.

I think Bischoff is a more heady player and more solid defensively but that is the same general comparison I had in mind.

Probably appropriate that post 9000 for me is recruiting related.

has anyone had a chance to watch michaelson play? its been talked about before that he is off to a slow start in the ushl. but 1/3 of the way through the season he is still stuck at 1 goal.. and he is playing games (19 played). to put things into perspective- sam warning had like 25 goals on the year last season in the ushl. is michaelson physical anyhow? i know he has speed.. what is holding him back, and what are his strengths?

thanks. dave

I've seen him play several times in high school. Great speed, but honestly I don't see much else...hope he comes in a does something, but at this point I'm thinking penalty kill. :dup:

Maybe a good comparison...thinking AJ might be a bigger than Miskovich, though. Funny you should bring up Miskovich. I remember one time sitting with Glen Sonmor listening to him just gush over Miskovich shortly after he committed to the U. Just a good example of how even pure blooded hockey people can think one thing, only to have it turn out differently.

I am going to see Minnetonka play tonight, so I will get to watch Lettieri. I imagine the game could get pretty ugly with regard to score.
President GWB said, "And it seems like Minnesota is pretty good at hockey, too."

"I think in the best interest of his career, he definitely would benefit from playing one more year of college," Gretzky said.

I like to go to games that have future Gophers in them. Below is a list of players I'm looking to see. Are there others that I should include?

Jake Bischoff (Grand Rapids) Junior D
Michael Brodzinski (Blaine) Junior D
Justin Kloos (Lakeville South) Senior F
Vinni Lettieri (Minnetonka) Junior F
Lou Nanne (Edina) Junior F

Certainly no commitment that I've heard of, but let's hope and add Luc Snuggerud, Soph, Eden Prairie, D to the list.

I really wish Mario would have went to Minnesota. I can understand the fact that Notre Dame is known for academics and it's his dads alma mater, but he has a future in hockey and is highly unlikely to be in school for four years. I never did see exactly why he decided against Minnesota, was it just because he didn't want to have tensions with his father or something? Anyone know an answer to this?
