It is unlikely Alt, Holl and Schmidt will all stick around for 4 years. The way Marshall is playing he could bolt after year two. Better to be prpared. You don't want to get caught short of d men. Student could be moved to forward if they have too many d men.

Guentzel had been up at GR earlier in the week so it isn't a big surprise. Bischoff was going to be a Gopher. It was just a matter of when. My suspicion is he'll be a flex recruit to come in either 2013 or 2014 depending on need. Very good pickup.

With all of the D-men we have now, including commits, is it safe to assume Bischoff is an absolute top teir talent defenseman? I mean does he have that potential? I would be surprised if the Gophers are offering scholarships to defenseman that don't look to be in that Ballard, Leopold, Martin, Goligoski level when they have the luxury of being able to wait for that gem to appear.

I do like these Bischoff, Nanne, Letierri kids coming in if for nothing else they will know what it means to wear the "M" and should appreciate it.

Reading the story and seeing that he's wanted to be part of the program his whole life reminded me of the photo Grant Potulny used to show of himself wearing his Gopher hat as a little kid. If Bischoff puts in half the effort of Grant I'd be happy.

There's something pretty funny in the story from the Grand Rapids paper too. It says that Jake grew up watching his dad play for the Gophers. He must be one of the oldest high school juniors ever since Grant played for the Gophers from '88-91.

Jake must have a few old tapes from the KTIN days when Frank and Wally were doing the broadcasts.

I wouldn't grind on Marty too hard. Granted he didn't put up very much point wise but he worked pretty hard and wasn't afraid to stick his nose into the action. Pretty tough kid.

Just to clarify, I was talking about expectations. I think it's an important context for these discussions. It's why we all love (or should love) Serratore so much.

Marty Nanne and Danny Brooks were in the same recruiting class IIRC, wondered if the same holds true for the next generation...

I agree with most of what you said; I'm just surprised there's another d-man bagged. Anyone remember recently when Leddy, Lofquist, and Scott all left within about a year and we had to go out and find a hidden gem like Parenteau? Or how about the summer of '07 when Vannelli graduates, E.J. and Goli go pro, we have to find a replacement for Hagemo, and a guy who likely would have been a d-man for much of the season (O'Brien) gets drafted and leaves for the WHL? I am a firm believer that you win with a dominant and deep defensive corps above anything else, so I am very happy with the potential rosters and combination. I'm bragging as much as anything else.

The Wings are lucky. Once Lidstrom retires, Marshall can step right in and they won't miss a beat.

I recently was able to talk to Gopher commit Justin Kloos. He came across as a very humble and intelligent young man. There's likely no information in this piece that you Gopher diehards don't already know, but I figured I'd post it here anyway.

The only thing more ludicrous that I have seen posted on this board, other than that which mentions Ben Marshall in the same sentence as Pavel Datsyuk, was Thirty Four stating that Patrick White was going to be a 1,000 point scorer in the NHL.

I've never seen him play, but I've heard from those who have that he has speed like his old man, has a big heart and is thrilled to play at the U. That's a good start.

He is a nice fluid skater, but I don't think he's a big speed guy like Grant was. Nice, solid player. I'm sure it will get a rise out of some here, but I think I see some of a Chris Harrington type in body type and skating.

I think Bischoff is a more heady player and more solid defensively but that is the same general comparison I had in mind.

Just a good example of how even pure blooded hockey people can think one thing, only to have it turn out differently.

I can understand the fact that Notre Dame is known for academics and it's his dads alma mater, but he has a future in hockey and is highly unlikely to be in school for four years. I never did see exactly why he decided against Minnesota, was it just because he didn't want to have tensions with his father or something? Anyone know an answer to this?
