GPL on Twitter

Postby Jupiter » Tue 7/14/09 3:17 pm

I think a few people may be interested in this... For those of you that use Twitter, I have created an account for GPL. You can find it here: http://twitter.com/gopherpucklive

I am very new to this, so I am not sure how it's going to work. I believe that you need an account in order to subscribe to the GPL Twitter updates. Right now I plan to use it for headline news and score updates. So when something significant happens in the UofM Hockey world, I will post an update... It's mostly for people who are away from their computer since you can get updates via many types of cell phones. But you can also follow online as well.

If you want more information on how to use it, you can do that here: http://help.twitter.com/portal

I have learned a little bit more about Twitter.... It appears to me that this will work best for you when you are offline. You can enter your cell phone number in to your settings if you wish. So if you subscribe to GPL on Twitter, any updates will be sent to you via Text Message. You can obviously follow Twitter online as well.

Right now we will use it for headline news and scores. So the day-to-day stuff will most likely not be posted. But bigger things like players coming and going, coaching changes, injuries and final scores of games will be the kind of content you will get... But feel free to give us feedback on the type of information you want to get via Twitter.

Right now I have the GPL writers and myself set up to post on the GPL Twitter account.... We will try to stay on top of things the best we can, but we do have jobs and other things going on so we can't always get updates out as they happen.

Since we will not be doing constant updates with the GPL Twitter account.....

If you want more updates on recruits and other behind the scenes stuff, I highly recommend Hammy's Twiiter. You can subscribe to him here: http://twitter.com/hammyhockey

We are currently at 278 followers for the GPL Twitter account... How's it working out for the people using it?

Ryan, Jeff and myself are all different on what we post and how often we tweet. But I think that gives it some variety. Sometimes we only do period updates and other times we update a lot more often. It all depends on what is appropriate and how busy we are at the time.

Any thoughts???

I have relied on GPL on Twitter several time this season when I have been out of state for work or for family in Iowa. The period updates are life savers on those weekends. The general information updates are nice also since I only check GPL once a day usually. The World Junior updates last night were a surprise, and maybe Olympic updates could be something that some of us might like if you guys have the time or desire to do for the rest of us here on GPL. Bottom line you guys do a great job to keep us puckers informed and excited about Gopher hockey and all other levels of hockey!

It's been working great for me. Had to have it a couple of times this year and it gave me exactly what I wanted.

Okay, I need help from who ever is running the GPL twitter feed this weekend. I am headed to Iowa ( insert Iowa joke here:coffee: ) this weekend to camp for a haunted hayride weekend with some friends. Here's the catch...no wi-fi or broad band available to me, I don't have a fancy phone so I can't keep track that way, and they only have dish network in their camper!! :ahhh: So I have to rely on GPL twitter to get the updates on the games.... you did great last weekend just asking you to keep up the good work. I will probably have STG's and Ben's twitter sent to my phone this weekend also...for their "insights" on what is going on with the games. Here's to flying blind for the weekend...GO GOPHERS!!!

We have been cutting back on tweeting during the game because the official U twitter "GoldenGopherHky" and Roman from the Strib "eyeonupuk" tend to tweet the exact same stuff that we do during the game.. All posted within seconds of each other. We are trying to move toward more commentary and period summaries during the games to prevent duplication.

I noticed that.

If you want a complete running commentary on the games you should have all 3 going at once. Your phone will be going off every minute or so.

Next best thing to an actual radio feed when you can't watch.

Sorry about that...this weekend was a house-hunting weekend in DFW for my wife and me. For some reason, the cheap bastards who own the Crowne Plaza in north Dallas didn't have the DirecTV sports package...and let's just say that college hockey isn't much of a draw in the bars down here.
