Still working out some bugs, but it looks like we are slowing getting back online. Hopefully we get everything worked out in the next day or so. So you will see some strange code at the top of the page at times. There is also something not right with the font sizes on the portal page.


But at least we are back up and running!

I thought that I would have to reload all of the files for GPL and my other domains. Which would have taken all day with my slow connection. I also thought that I would have re-create the databases and re-import all of the data. I think the entire process would have taken most if not all day to do.

Well the support guy moved all of the files for all of my domains. He set up the database and imported the data. He literally saved me hours & hours of work.

After changing the timezone setting for the php setup, it appears we are now back at 100%...

So here is what happened....

I wanted to upgrade the server control panel software (PLESK). I can do this by clicking and upgrade button and the software updates on it's own. Well, apparently the "automatic" upgrade process failed. It did this midstream and caused problems all over the place. Mostly it caused the database to not connect to the server.

I contacted my provider and they tried a few things to fix it, but nothing worked. So they decided to contact the company that makes the PLESK software for assistance. In the end, they could not fix the problem either. One of the biggest problems was the time it took for my provider to respond and then it took even longer for the people at PLESK to respond to them.

So last night I suggested to my provider that we just start fresh with a clean server and move everything over. That was a much better option considering how long it was taking for them and the people at PLESK to work on the problem. Plus they had no solution to the problem.

So we did that and now everything is back to normal. I know quite a few people still cannot get to GPL because the new DNS info still needs to propagate on the internet, but hopefully that happens soon.


Lesson Learned?

Never trust an "automatic" upgrade. Even though they say it should work without a problem, that simple is not the case when it comes to server software.

Apparently php was supposed to be removed before upgrading plesk software from version 9 to 10. Yet that part was never mentioned anywhere. If it's an automatic upgrade process, you would think that if it needs to uninstall php before upgrading that it would actually do that before proceeding. There is zero documentation removing or doing anything other than clicking a checkbox to upgrade to the most recent version.

I have upgraded plesk in the past and never really had any problems.

If GPL had not been down then the Gophers would not have lost. I am pretty sure that CC would have been up all night Thursday reading GPL to get the insider knowledge that is shared. That leaves them tired for the game and the Gophers win. Now that it s back up I am pretty sure the Gopher win out.

GPL is a nightmare to check occationally. This site is much more user friendly. Plus, you don't have to kiss Jupiter's ass and tell him who great he is either.
