For 10 years I listened to the PA & Dubay radio show from 9am to noon on KFAN... I may not have heard every single show, but I was able to enjoy most of their run. I was never a big fan of PA (Paul Allen) but he was tolerable. I liked Dubay (Jeff Dubay) because he was a Rube just like me. Jeff was a huge booster of Gopher Hockey and regularly talked about the team on the air. That is probably the main reason why I listened to the show....
Recently Jeff was let go by KFAN due to being arrested on drug related charges. (I am too lazy to look up the exact charge). Being connected to Gopher Hockey, I have met Jeff and most of his family. They have always been very nice to me, so I really don't want to discuss his personal problems here. All I can say is that I hope he gets things turned around soon.
Anyway... When Jeff was let go by KFAN, the PA & Dubay show became the PA & the Producer show.... What that basically means is that it is now the Paul Allen show with some support by the producer Justin Gaard. I have listen to the show hoping it would not change a lot from the PA & Dubay show, but I must say that I can't listen to it. PA was tolerable when he was with Dubay, but now he just terrible. The things that I hated about him before have been amplified by a factor of 10. They have tried to balance the show with Justin Gaard, but it has just not worked at all.
The hockey talk has gone down quit a bit. Being the State of Hockey, this really disappoints me since PA & Dubay was the only radio show to talk hockey on a regular basis. But it's not just that. PA referring himself as "VOX" is something that just bugs the hell out of me. Apparently he is using VOX to refer to his voice or something like that. I really don't know, but it's just awful. Talking about yourself in third person is very off putting. Maybe it's an ego thing? I don't know. It just seems that since Dubay has been gone, PA's head has grown even bigger than I thought possible.
Will they replace Dubay permanently? Who knows. They have had Paul Chargian (sp?) and Kevin Gorg as co-hosts with PA. With Charch we will end up getting nothing but more Vikings talk. Seeing that the bulk of the KFAN programming centers on the Vikings, I really don't think adding Charch is a good idea. How about Gorg? It would definitely help get more hockey talk back on the air which I am definitely for. But it would also mean that we would get more Horse Racing/Gambling talk. I would rather listen to the farm report on WCCO than listen that. Horse Racing talk is just un-listenable.
I can only hope that once Jeff gets back on his feet that KFAN will re-consider and get him back on the air. I really don't think this will happen, but maybe if PA's ratings drop a ton they may take a look at bringing him back. But for now, I have decided to cut back on listening to KFAN from 9-noon. It's just not the same without Jeff "Puffy" Dubay.
