Minnesota Loses 2-1 in Overtime Against North Dakota

The University of Minnesota women’s hockey team suffered a 2-1 loss in overtime at Ridder Arena Friday night. Senior Jen Schoullis scored Minnesota’s lone goal in the second period. The game marks Minnesota’s first overtime loss this season.

Neither Minnesota nor North Dakota scored in the first period, although the Gophers gave up four power play opportunities to UND. Minnesota’s penalty killers successfully killed all four penalties. Both teams collected six shots on goal in the opening period.

The Gophers took three more penalties in the second period, but only gave up power play opportunities on two penalties. North Dakota also took penalties, and the Gophers capitalized on the third one as Jen Schoullis scored on the power play to give Minnesota a 1-0 lead. The goal marked the 22nd for Schoullis this season. Sarah Erickson and Anne Schleper had assists on the goal, 16 minutes into the second period. After coming up even in shots on goal in the opening period, the Gophers outshot UND 12-6 in the second period.

North Dakota tied the score at 1-1 with a goal by Jocelyne Lamoureu five and a half minutes into the third period, with assists from Michelle Karvinen and Monique Lamoureux-Kolls. The Gophers had two power play chances in the third period, but were not able to score with the advantage. Minnnesota led in shots 16-12 in the third period. Gopher goalie Noora Raty had several key saves in the final period to keep Minnesota in the game and force overtime.

In overtime, Minnesota’s Erickson was whistled for cross-checking, giving North Dakota a power play chance with a minute and 15 seconds remaining in the period. Forty-five seconds into the power play, Josefine Jakobsen scored, unassisted, for North Dakota, getting the 2-1 victory.

The Gophers move to 26-5-2 on the season and 20-5-2 in WCHA play, while North Dakota improves to 20-9-3 overall and 16-8-3 in conference play.

The same teams meet again Saturday afternoon at Ridder Arena. Saturday’s game will begin at 4:07 p.m., with a senior day recognition before the game. Minnesota will honor its seven seniors in their final regular-season home game.
