The University of Minnesota women’s hockey team earned a 4-1 win in Mankato today. The Gophers got goals from four different players as Kelly Terry, Kelly Seeler, Rachel Ramsey and Emily West all scored for Minnesota.

Both teams were scoreless in the first period, with the Gophers outshooting the Mavericks 13-5. Minnesota finally got on the scoreboard in the second period as Terry found the net less than a minute into the period, managing to slide the puck in behind MSU goalie Ali Altmann. Becky Kortum had the assist on the goal. The goal marked the ninth for Terry this season.

West was called for body checking 17 minutes into the period, giving MSU a power play opportunity. The Mavericks capitalized and tied up the score at 1-1, as Lauren Zrust scored for MSU nearly 18 minutes into the period. The tie didn’t last long as Minnesota went ahead again when Seeler scored for the Gophers at 18 minutes, 51 seconds, assisted by Jen Schoullis. The goal was Seeler’s second of the season. The Gophers outshot MSU again in the second period with the tally at 13-4.

The Gophers got a power play opportunity nine and a half minutes into the third period, and Ramsey took advantage, getting a power play goal just past the 11 minute mark to give the Gophers a 3-1 lead. Mira Jalosuo and Sarah Davis had assists on the goal. MSU was called for another penalty less than a minute later, and again the Gophers capitalized on the power play. This time West scored with assists from Davis and Schoullis. The score would remain at 4-1 for the remainder of the game. Minnesota finished with 17 shots in the final period to Minnesota State’s eight.

The Gophers improve to 22-4-2 with the win, including a 16-4-2 mark in WCHA play. Minnesota State moves to 7-21-0 and 3-19-0 in conference games.

Minnesota is on the road again next weekend, with games at St. Cloud State Friday and Saturday. Friday’s game will start at 7 p.m. with a 2 p.m. start on Saturday.
