Gophers Tally 4-1 Victory Over Rival Bulldogs

Led by senior captain Jen Schoullis who scored two power play goals, No. 3 Minnesota improved to 9-2-0 and 7-2-0 in WCHA games with a 3-1 victory over Minnesota Duluth at Ridder Arena. The Bulldogs fall to 4-4-1 overall and 1-3-1 in WCHA play.
Neither team scored in the opening period, as the Bulldogs tallied eight shots while the Gophers had five. The five shots was the lowest in a period for the Gophers at home this season, and their lowest since the 3-2 loss at Wisconsin on Oct. 14. Minnesota had three penalties in the period, but did not allow Minnesota Duluth to score on the power play. Minnesota had two power play opportunities in the first period, but like Duluth, wasn’t able to capitalize with the advantage.
Despite being outshot by the Gophers, the Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead with a goal from Kacy Ambroz seven minutes and 54 seconds into the period. Minnesota responded with a goal from senior captain Jen Schoullis on the power play five and a half minutes later. Schoullis had assists from sophomore Amanda Kessel and junior Megan Bozek. The second period was riddled with penalties, as Minnesota Duluth took five penalties and Minnesota took three. After being outshot in the opening period, the Gophers had an 18-4 advantage in shots in the second period.
The Gophers took the lead nine minutes and 11 seconds into the third period as senior Sarah Erickson crashed the net, getting her first goal of the game and sixth of the season. Kessel’s linemates Jen Schoullis and Amanda Kessel were credited with assists. Minnesota extended its lead to 3-1 with an insurance goal from Schoullis on the power play, marking her second power play goal of the game. Megan Bozek and Kessel each had assists on the goal, scored 15 minutes and four seconds into the final period. The Gophers made it 4-1 with an empty net goal from Megan Bozek with 46 seconds remaining in the game, assisted by Anne Schleper and Sarah Davis.
Minnesota is now 29-23-6 all-time against Minnesota Duluth, and 16-6-3 against the Bulldogs at home.
