I can guarantee that he will garner his share of haters just like anyone else that takes the job. His goalie skills are insane though!
He sounds okay. But I heard he once wore a Huskies jersey. Before giving him the job we need to find out if he is willing to paint his face maroon and gold, sing the Rouser and do cartwheels when the Gophers score, and punch himself in the face and make retching noises when the other team scores.

My enjoyment of the game is determined far more by the play on the ice than by some talking head in the booth.

Agreed. Judging by most of the posts in this thread we might as well not have any commentators and just show the games with white noise in the background. I don't know, maybe some people honestly would prefer that, but I'm not one of them. I liked Frank and was pretty indifferent about LaPanta, but no matter who is calling the games, the fact of the matter is we get to see almost all of them. That's a privilege and something most of us seem to be taking for granted. I'm just grateful for that.
Frankly, I don't care all that much who calls the games as long as FSN continues to broadcast them. That being said, my preference would be to have guys in the booth who have a connection to Gopher hockey or are fans of Gopher hockey. I would want someone who understands the tradition of the team and understands how much they mean to the fans, especially the fans who post on this board. After all, these are regional broadcasts that are primarily for fans of the team, so why wouldn't you want someone calling the games who has some interest in the team. IMO, the best announcers for regional-type broadcasts like Gopher hockey are those who are fans of the team whose games they are calling, but can still call an exciting game even if that team isn't winning.
One last opinion, best announcer of any sport right now for me is Ian Darke. I know I'll get some flak because he's a soccer announcer, but the way he has called the men's and women's world cups in recent years has been peerless IMO.

Watching him call the beginning of the Germany-Netherlands match as I type this, and I agree. He is awesome.
His call of the Landon Donovan goal in the World Cup against Algeria was brilliant.

Here is Torri's video... He would do a great job!

If Wisconsin-Madison is the state's most prestigious university and the state itself is known as The Dairy State, does that mean UW is Bovine University?
Among 42 applicants for the Gophers' TV play-by-play job for the coming season, there's whispering that former North Stars voice Doug McLeod could get serious consideration.

I don't care who might be in the rest of the group of 41. There isn't a better choice than Doug McLeod. That would be a real step up. Doug was also fantastic when he was doing the play by play for the Gophers on the radio with Tom Vannelli providing the color commentary.

Okay, I didn't say he would be great. I said he would be hilarious. Personally, I would still prefer him to the fake-voiced broadcasters doing the games as of late.

Couldn’t care less if a commentator or PxP guy is a former player. And just because he played the game does not make him a great hockey mind. I suspect you feel he is “objective” and are enamored with PM because he practically roots for UND at times. He tends to like UND way more than most former Gophers for some reason.![]()
Maybe he can take over for Hennessy on the Whioux broadcasts.

Funny they would call Woog a homer. How about Pat Sweeny for the Whoiux fans he is a homer. So is the radio guy for them, any time a Whioux falls down he wants someone thrown out for mugging a guy.
Will Woog still do some fill-in work like last year?

Funny you bring up Pat Sweeney, he is no longer doing UND hockey broadcasts, Dan Hammer is now the voice and face of UND sports broadcasts.

I loved Woog. He was a homer at heart and bleeds Maroon and Gold but just as important he loves college hockey. He would give the Gophers the business when they screwed up and as a true college hockey fan had no problem complimenting an opponent for doing something right.
I get that those days have passed so we have to move on and there will probably not be anyone else like him, but what he had in him is something I'd love to find again eve if at a lesser degree.

I think that is probably the best explanation of why I think people disliked LaPanta as the Gopher play by play announcer.
