Interesting notes:

Only one game against Notre Dame

One non-conference game against Canisius on a Sunday after a Friday game against the U-18 squad.

As of this schedule, both @ Wisconsin games listed in Madison which either contradicts the Soldier Field game, or will be edited later this week if the game is announced.

22 home games, including 2 exhibitions

Michigan State series will be Thursday/ Friday or Friday/Sunday due to Football

Solider Field or Wrigley, makes no differents. With the Gophers not going to Omaha this year, makes Chicago for a long weekend all the more inviting.

A regular season game, outside. In a football stadium. In a neutral city. You can't even make up how stupid this idea is. Was this negotiated between Alvarez and Maturi? It had to be.

Not to mention the game is between two schools who both have outdoor football stadiums.

I hope you aren't someone who whines about college hockey being a niche sport with little visibility. Having a big weekend like this could be great for the sport and could get some media attention outside our borders. While it may not be the MOST practical choice, it could help make the sport more visible.......while at the same time making for one hell of a fun road trip.

At least they aren't taking away one of our home games.

It doesn't bother me that college hockey is a niche sport and I realize that that is never really going to change. And playing a game outside where nobody can see the ice and the game is slower is really not going to increase the popularity of the game. I think people should stick to the "it is fun to get drunk outside" reason for liking this game. It makes a lot more sense.

I didn't see the Canisius single game coming.... Same goes for Notre Dame. Oh well, the GPL schedule page has been updated. Though I will wait to update the MSU series once the days are finalized.

BTW.... I will adjust the countdown up top if the MSU game moves to Thursday, but the countdown will never take an exhibition game as the first game of the season.

How about if they have the B10 alternate for in-booth commentary (ala like FSN with Doug or special guests) during the game with Ann Carroll asking text questions to the trio during live play?

Assuming we have the first round playoff games at home, the Gophers only leave the state of Minnesota once between December 9th and the NCAA tournament. The only games played outside of Minnesota are just a 4 hour ride to Madison and the outdoor game at Soldier Field.
I was there in 75, 76, 79, 81, 83, 89, 02 and have watched our favorite team win 3 championships. :D

That's how I view them.

If I can go on the cheap (read: if there is an outdoor game at TCF), I would probably go just to say I did it, and to see what it's like. But I won't go out of my way to get to one.

I believe the phrase I used was COULD HELP MAKE THE SPORT MORE VISIBLE. That's a little different than "exploded college hockey coverage."

That being said, you cannot argue that there is a ton more college hockey on TV now than there was even 3-4 years ago. By paying an extra $7/month I can probably watch 4-6 college hockey games on any Friday/Saturday night. It is getting more visibility and games like this cannot hurt.

What I'd like to know is how many of the people complaining about this game would have been going if it were in Madison? Does this really impact you in any way or are you just complaining to complain? It sounds like the players are looking forward to it. It sounds like there are plenty of fans looking forward to it. I bet it makes money. It WILL provide more visibility. What's the problem?

It is going to be fun. And fun is good.

This is a sincere question, ok---please don't start accusing me of "taking teams too lightly" blah, blah, blah. . . .

Is anyone else concerned about the fact we don't play in many hostile environments this year? No going to UND or Duluth? No going to Michigan or MSU? No going to Denver where we really have to battle?

Yes---I know we will get that in St. Cloud and Wisc---and AA and Tech are never easy. Vermont will at least be unfamiliar territory, but I wish it a different eastern school. Anyway--- I don't think this is great for us, big picture.

It could do wonders for the Pairwise now that the "quality win" component is no more. Of course, that's assuming they can win at home, which was fairly problematic last season non conference.

Yes---I know we will get that in St. Cloud and Wisc---and AA and Tech are never easy. Vermont will at least be unfamiliar territory, but I wish it a different eastern school. Anyway--- I don't think this is great for us, big picture.

Are you talking about the implications for the playoffs? I don't think it's that big of a deal because wherever we end up for the playoffs, it's not likely to be a hostile environment per se. Our fans travel well, and most of the regionals are pretty empty anyway.

Anybody know why the Chicago game is not at Wrigley? If they're after the "novelty factor" it seems like Wrigley would add alot to that.

The outdoor games were interesting at first, but it didn't take long before I got tired of listening to everyone involved spend the whole game talking about how wonderful it is.

If I wanted to be bombarded by that much self-congratulation, I'd come on GPL more often.

I think many people go to the outdoor games to say they were there - chest thumping type of thing. If it's part of my ticket package I would go, else, rather watch on TV.

Terrible idea and there is no point in doing this anymore since the attendance record can't be matched after the big house game.

I said this on USCHO but I saw the claim this is for badger recruiting. They are going after the Chicago area and think this will help them. Not sure how, but who knows what's going on inside barry's head.

Interesting that we won't have a Friday-Saturday home series until the games against Wisco in mid-November.

why does everything have to be about whether or not they can break the michigan outdoor record? how about its an outdoor college hockey game against a rival- which will be very fun for the kids and for most fans. haula went out of his way to mention his excitement about it in his announcement he is returning to the U of M. id obviously prefer it be in minneapolis or madison but im looking forward to watching the outdoor game in chicago if thats where it needs to happen to work.

Honestly, I'd MUCH rather watch a game at Soldier Field than Wrigley. Baseball stadiums are a flipping joke when it comes to outdoor hockey games due to the field shape. There really isn't a good seat at baseball stadiums when it comes to hockey, whereas at football stadiums the seating is primarily set up the same as hockey arenas, just farther away.

No one is saying you have to agree with us about the game but last I checked we dont have to agree with you either. I can go to Chicago whenever I want (I have friends and relatives there) and I wont have to waste money going to a hockey game where I wont be able to see what is happening anyways. ;) If you want to that is your deal but I dont want to see a bunch of whining on here about sightlines and so on after because you guys are all circlejerking about it now even though you know it is going to be terrible

Me I will watch it on tv while drinking a big ole glass of Jamo :)

You won't have any better view than those of us who go to the game. We all have DVR. I will go and have my fun then return home to watch the game a little more closely. I do this for all my road games. No need to waste a good time worrying about details.

I agree, but I'm not going to not go just because people talked about how wonderful previous games were. If I go it will be because it's Gophers hockey, vs UW, in a unique setup, in a great city and a chance to attend a one of a kind event. I somewhat agree with many of the criticisms of the setup so don't get me wrong, but I attended college FB homecoming games that I barely remember paying attention to for various reasons so why the heck not?

If I didn't have relatives in Chicago I might not consider it but because I do I definitely have it on my radar, crappy viewing or not.

Wisconsin can play a football game at 11am in front of 75 thousand and a hockey at 8pm with 12 thousand. The gophers play in front of 50 thousand and 10 thousand but can't play on the same day, somethings wrong. Either they don't want to or they're to lazy to.

i think it mostly has to do with mariucci and tcf being right next to each other and the shared parking lots. not the case in madison.

Actually I think it's a matter of staff to work both events. Parking does become an issue, but if the events are far enough apart, which they would be in meggie's example, space shouldn't matter. However as far as I know it becomes a nightmare to staff all the services for both the huge football game and the moderately large hockey game just hours apart, especially on Homecoming weekend. Maybe the U could get away with it if football was playing Florida Atlantic and hockey was playing Anchorage, but I doubt it could happen for Homecoming and hockey's season opener playing past and future conference rival MSU.

I think it's great that they don't play the same day the football team is in town. My wife and I have season tickets for both sports and we don't like going to two games in one day. There are many other fans that also have tickets to both sports. Parking would be an issue. Most people don't like the 11AM starts in football, so if you started the game at 1PM it would not be over until 4:30 (give or take a few min.). Most of the parking lots around Mariucci are tailgate lots for football. They are also contract lots for season ticket holders in Hockey and Football. When people started showing up for the Hockey game between 5:30 and 6:30 many tailgaters would still be there. There would not be enough parking in the contract lots. Also, have you ever seen the lots after a football game. They need to be cleaned before you start putting cars in them for another event.

Question(s): For the opener again Mich St, do we expect to hang the banner? Do you usually do a presentation and the whole deal for banners at Mariucci? That is something I have never experienced and it is something I don't want to miss if it happens.

I've been wrong before, but I do think this is usually done the first home game of the year.

Thanks. I hope you're right. I don't want to miss that if possible!

I thought they only do a presentation for a National Championship banner. I could be wrong though.

I know you're being a little sarcastic, but looking at the standings, it's hard to believe that UMD, Denver, and CC could be better than last season to catch the team. North Dakota, Nebraska-Omaha, Saint Cloud, and Michigan Tech should be improved, but North Dakota's the only team I see that could catch Minnesota at this point. Of course, we'll wait and see how the offseason goes and if Bjugstad is back...

Ha. Okay, maybe a little sarcastic. I was going to post that I was waiting to hear your mathematical predicitions for the team's finish next year, which was annoyingly accurate this year. But after looking through the potential lineups in the WCHA next year, only North Dakota returns experienced success, and I agree they look to be the biggest threat to the Gophers, again. Denver got wiped out by early signings, CC without Schwarz and Wisconsin without Schultz is like adding two more St. Cloud teams to the mix. Michigan Tech will be a wild card, I hope. It would nice to see them do well. How many points do you think they can earn next year LeoPohl?

Could be worse--could have been dx. :biggrin2:

I'm going to have to wait until September or October to do that. :D I'm luckier those months. :biggrin2:

If Wisconsin-Madison is the state's most prestigious university and the state itself is known as The Dairy State, does that mean UW is Bovine University?
