Helluva volleyball match between the Gophers and Penn State going on right now. Penn St took the early 2-0 lead but after the break the Gophers have rallied to tie up it 2-2. Gonna be an exciting final set!

I wanted to bump this, because Mike Hebert did a great job putting the VB program on the map and making it a perennial contender year in and year out in a state that geographically isn't known for volleyball.

Yeah, he will be missed, but whoever fills in will inherit a talented team.

During his time:
- 3 final four teams
- A NC game appearance
- 3 top 5 rankings including a stint at #1 for a while.

Penn State wins NCAA title, beating Cal on Saturday, who knocked the Gophers out of the tourney. The Gophers beat Penn State late in the season leading up to the tourney. This was Penn State's 4 straight title.

I don't know if anyone else posted this, but Elizabeth Turgeon (Pierre Turgeon's daughter) died in a car accident. I thought I read she committed to the gophers awhile back. Thoughts and prayers go to the Turgeon family.

You hit up the powers-that-be for more spending money for trips down south.

That's too bad for John Anderson and the boys. They put together a nice season last year. This year could be a bit more challenging.

A homecoming of sort, too. McCutcheon is the son-in-law of Paul Bachman, the former CEO of Bachman's Garden Centers, who was murdered before the start of the Beijing summer Olympics.

And since no one cares I'll just edit this post to say they lost all 4 games in New Mexico. I guess this new coach idea is going to take some time.

The Gophers baseball team is making another late-season charge. They swept Michigan over the weekend to push their overall record above .500 for the first time in a few weeks and also moved into sole possession of second place in the Big 10 standings. The sweep also put Michigan's BT tournament hopes on life support  as the Wolverines are now in last place.

They are 8-1 in their last three Big 10 series and trail conference-leading Michigan State by two games with six to play.

Minnesota travels to Penn State this weekend and closes out the regular season May 19-20 at Target Field against Ohio State. Last year, the Gophers took 2 of 3 at Ohio State to knock the Buckeyes out of the BT tournament. It would be fun to see them do that again this year at Target Field.

Catching Michigan State would be nice but holding onto second place is good enough because the top two teams in the conference receive first-round byes in the Big 10 tournament, which is Memorial Day weekend in Columbus.

Winner of the BT tournament gets an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament and will probably be the only the BT team to make it. Michigan State is 70th in the RPI, highest in the BT, so that probably rules out any BT team snagging an at-large bid.

I know college baseball goes largely unnoticed but I've followed the Gophers since I was a kid and it's always fun to see them at least rule in the Big 10.

The Gophers are a third of the way through the loser's bracket. Gotta beat Purdue this afternoon, win two more on Saturday and the "if necessary" game on Sunday.

Gophers baseball staves off elimination a third straight time, this time with a 1-0 win over Purdue. AJ Pettersen drives in the only run of the game with a single in the bottom of the seventh. Scott Matyas adds to his Big Ten record save total. Minnesota has now eliminated half the tournament field.

Next game is Saturday at 2:30 against the loser of tonight's Illinois/Michigan State game.

The 1-0 win by the Gophs is only the 2nd time in the 30 year history of the Big Ten Tourney that a
team won a game by a 1-0 score. :confused2:

Great story about current Gopher VB player Granquist and the relationship with her sister.

Hey Scooby, if I recall correctly, you're the resident expert on Gopher softball. Any idea if this young lady is the daughter of former Gopher defenseman Sean Fabian?

From "Minnesota Inks Six for the 2012-13 Season".............

Sidney Fabian is a Lake Elmo, Minn. native and a four-time letterwinner at Hill-Murray High School, where she is coached by former Gopher Colleen Conway. Fabian, is a three-time all-conference team member and a two-time all-state honoree. Sidney excels both on the field and in the classroom. She is a three-time Science Student of the Month. Sidney’s athletic ability and softball skills will strengthen the Gopher squad.

“Sidney is a great athlete who has the ability to play the short game and hit for power. She is a true lefty who could see time in the outfield or at first base.”

I see she is also a hockey player for Hill.

Cool. I had no idea. Interesting that she's picking softball over hockey. Must be one heck of a softball player.

Ness should be a force for this squad the next few years.

They will be an exciting team to watch next season. They have 5 returning All Americans and a couple of redshirt freshman that look promising. They will be favorites in the BIG along with PSU and Iowa.

It's an embarrassment of riches for the U athletic department right now.

- Women's hockey: National champs

- Men's hockey: Frozen Four

- Men's basketball: NIT Frozen Four

- Women's basketball: WBI champs

Has one school ever had such success in one season?

Gopher baseball team takes first two of a three-game home series against Michigan. They go for the sweep on Sunday afternoon. Never get tired of seeing the Gophers beat Michigan, no matter the sport.

Gopher BB team faces Penn State at Target Field this Saturday at 2:05 PM. Good chance to see a game at Target at a reasonable price ($10 adults, $5 students and kids). And you won't have to see the Twins get trounced yet again.

I can't believe no one mention the fact that Gopher Baseball played their last game on Seibert Field last night...and beat St Thomas 9-2. Also awesome was the fact that the last Gopher hit was a Grand Slam.

I will be going to the game on Saturday at TF. Should be fun. Especially if it's GA...including the Champions Club...like it was when the stadium 1st opened. :)

Gopher baseball suffered through a tough second half of the Big 10 season and will not participate in the conference tournament. Time to regroup and get back to the BT tournament in 2013, when it will be held at Target Field.

Is BT baseball getting more competitive? Used to be BT were the laughing stock of the major conferences - with the sport dominated by PAC12, SEC and Big12. Is the league catching up [and we aren't]?

Not really. We won the Big Ten last year, so its not like they are blowing by us. The Big ten is still the little sisters of the poor compared to the rest of the country in baseball.

Gophers baseball team has begun holding fall practices at the new Siebert Field. They're scheduled to play their first game there on April 5, 2013 against Ohio State. That falls between the hockey regionals and the Frozen Four so while the hockey team is gearing up for Pittsburgh, we can check out the new Siebert.

Congrats to Goldy on being #1, we knew it all the time! I miss the good old days of Goldy across the street with Gumby & Pokey. I remember a few years ago when Goldy hit the American Flag with the T-shirt cannon and the fans let him have it. And then of course when Goldy would get the better of the sub. :dup:

There's a reason Goldy won this year. :D

I actually caught a glimpse of myself sitting at the far end of the rink. No way I'd have known it was me if I didn't already know exactly where my seat was, but... ;)

Fully agree - showed it to my daugher in between periods at a game (she is now a mid20s UM grad school alum - as a little girl she would drag a beat up loved to death Goldy stuffed animal to games) - she loved it. She remembered the Gumby Pokey Goldy routine at the old Mariucci - that is as close to the spirit as it gets. Great video.
