Helluva volleyball match between the Gophers and Penn State going on right now. Penn St took the early 2-0 lead but after the break the Gophers have rallied to tie up it 2-2. Gonna be an exciting final set!

Gophers volleyball seeded 10th and will host first two rounds next weekend. Other three teams coming to the Pavillion are Iowa State, Creighton and North Dakota State. Gophers have 24 wins and the other three have 20 wins apiece.

I wanted to bump this, because Mike Hebert did a great job putting the VB program on the map and making it a perennial contender year in and year out in a state that geographically isn't known for volleyball.

I don't know if anyone else posted this, but Elizabeth Turgeon (Pierre Turgeon's daughter) died in a car accident. I thought I read she committed to the gophers awhile back. Thoughts and prayers go to the Turgeon family.

A homecoming of sort, too. McCutcheon is the son-in-law of Paul Bachman, the former CEO of Bachman's Garden Centers, who was murdered before the start of the Beijing summer Olympics.

This is big-- it should keep the momentum that Hebert has started with the program. It would be great to see Minnesota Volleyball turn into a revenue sport!

on this one, remember McCutheon's wife is from Lakeville & I'm fairly certain they were looikng for an excuse to move to the Twin Cities.

The Gophers baseball team is making another late-season charge. They swept Michigan over the weekend to push their overall record above .500 for the first time in a few weeks and also moved into sole possession of second place in the Big 10 standings. The sweep also put Michigan's BT tournament hopes on life support :dance:

as the Wolverines are now in last place.

They are 8-1 in their last three Big 10 series and trail conference-leading Michigan State by two games with six to play.

Minnesota travels to Penn State this weekend and closes out the regular season May 19-20 at Target Field against Ohio State. Last year, the Gophers took 2 of 3 at Ohio State to knock the Buckeyes out of the BT tournament. It would be fun to see them do that again this year at Target Field.

Catching Michigan State would be nice but holding onto second place is good enough because the top two teams in the conference receive first-round byes in the Big 10 tournament, which is Memorial Day weekend in Columbus.

Winner of the BT tournament gets an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament and will probably be the only the BT team to make it. Michigan State is 70th in the RPI, highest in the BT, so that probably rules out any BT team snagging an at-large bid.

I know college baseball goes largely unnoticed but I've followed the Gophers since I was a kid and it's always fun to see them at least rule in the Big 10.

Gophers baseball staves off elimination a third straight time, this time with a 1-0 win over Purdue. AJ Pettersen drives in the only run of the game with a single in the bottom of the seventh. Scott Matyas adds to his Big Ten record save total. Minnesota has now eliminated half the tournament field.

Next game is Saturday at 2:30 against the loser of tonight's Illinois/Michigan State game.

Hey Scooby, if I recall correctly, you're the resident expert on Gopher softball. Any idea if this young lady is the daughter of former Gopher defenseman Sean Fabian?

They will be an exciting team to watch next season. They have 5 returning All Americans and a couple of redshirt freshman that look promising. They will be favorites in the BIG along with PSU and Iowa.

I can't believe no one mention the fact that Gopher Baseball played their last game on Seibert Field last night...and beat St Thomas 9-2. Also awesome was the fact that the last Gopher hit was a Grand Slam.

I will be going to the game on Saturday at TF. Should be fun. Especially if it's GA...including the Champions Club...like it was when the stadium 1st opened.

Gopher baseball suffered through a tough second half of the Big 10 season and will not participate in the conference tournament. Time to regroup and get back to the BT tournament in 2013, when it will be held at Target Field.

Is BT baseball getting more competitive? Used to be BT were the laughing stock of the major conferences - with the sport dominated by PAC12, SEC and Big12. Is the league catching up [and we aren't]?

Not really. We won the Big Ten last year, so its not like they are blowing by us. The Big ten is still the little sisters of the poor compared to the rest of the country in baseball.

Gophers baseball team has begun holding fall practices at the new Siebert Field. They're scheduled to play their first game there on April 5, 2013 against Ohio State. That falls between the hockey regionals and the Frozen Four so while the hockey team is gearing up for Pittsburgh, we can check out the new Siebert.

Fully agree - showed it to my daugher in between periods at a game (she is now a mid20s UM grad school alum - as a little girl she would drag a beat up loved to death Goldy stuffed animal to games) - she loved it. She remembered the Gumby Pokey Goldy routine at the old Mariucci - that is as close to the spirit as it gets. Great video.
