Don't forget about Dan Heibert. The guy has turned the Gophers into a perennial final four team (at least a regional finals team) in a sport that is absolutely dominated by west coast teams (sans Nebraska). Not saying he's better than who's been mentioned (except maybe Anderson) but he's definitely in the conversation.

Gopher baseball and John Anderson don't get the props they deserve. I made it to Siebert for the first time a few years ago. A new stadium is a must as a reward for long term excellence. A couple of fields back home on the Range were nicer than that.

Anyone know how many games FSN is going to broadcast this year?

Wait there are other gopher sports? I kid, I kid. Of course all of our student athletes regardless of their sports or their team standings deserve congratulations. Most of these students won't play pro and yet they're busting their a :censored: es to be students and athletes at the same time.

Congratulations to the Wrestling team especially on their Big 10 Championship.

Congratulations to all Gopher Athletics and Student Athletes especially.

By the way, if there was a Big 10 of hockey, we would have won this year. We beat all the other Big 10 Hockey teams this year with only one Big 10 loss this year!

Gophers win a tight one 5-2 to capture the DQ Classic Championship. The hometown team scored two insurance runs in the bottom of the 8th inning to pad the lead. True Freshman southpaw Phil Isaksson came on to pitch perfect the last 3 2/3 innings for his first career save. Gophers have won two in a row to move to 2-4 on the year and have the week off before hosting the Metrodome Tournament next weekend.

Gopher wrestlers lose their lead today and relinquish the Big Ten Championship to Iowa. All four guys in the finals lost today, including Ness who was undefeated and Dustin Schlatter in the "match of the century" against another ex-4 time state high school champ (Metcalf from Iowa). Safratowich was seeded thrid and got PINNED in the 7 place match. They did qualify 9 for nationals, but they had to be disappointed.

Wrestling team crapping it down their leg at the NCAA championships. Ness is the only guy to make the finals. Dustin Schlatter misses the semifinals for the first time in his career and finishes 7th! 4 guys will be All-American but this is a bad showing no doubt. Iowa rolls to their 21st team title. Wow.

Molly Tadich, a former womens hoops player in the late 80's died Saturday of pulmonary edema.

She lived in Pioneer Hall the same year I did. She was nice but there was no doubt she was a basketball player. Despite being obviously tragic it's freaky to have a former athlete just one year older than me die under these circumstances.

After getting routed in their first game against Indiana the Gophers come back to crush PU & IL to stay alive in the loser's bracket of the B10 baseball tourney. They play tOSU tomorrow (2:30) with the winner advancing to face Indiana.

I would also like to point out once again the BADgers were a no show at the Big Ten tournament. :evil_laugh:

U eliminates Baylor, must beat LSU twice

The Gophers led 15-5 and then withstood a seven-run rally in the ninth inning to win.

The Gophers must now beat LSU twice to advance to the superregionals in the NCAA baseball tournament.

Should the Gophers advance, is it a new round of double-elim in the superregionals, or are they now one loss and done, regardless of when they lose?

No worries on that; LSU leads the Gophers 7-0 in the bottom of the 4th. Are the members of the Gopher pitching staff really just moonlighting from their real activity: slo-pitch softball? Jeepers, 32 runs given up in 31 innings so far.

I kinda chuckled at the 3rd BIG TEN team in the NCAA's, Indiana. After the won the BIG TEN Tourney, the announcers were acting like Indiana was going to be a serious threat in the NCAA's. I said right away, Indiana well go 0-2 and BBQ. Game 1: Louisville 8, Indiana 2 and Game 2: Vanderbilt 10, Indiana 0.

This year was fantastic for Gopher baseball - especially coming off the 2008 season.

They had an unbelievable turnaround and made it to one of the final 32 teams remaining - always a tough go when competing against the built in advantages of the southern schools.

As far as next year goes - the squad has a lot of youth but quite a bit will depend on whether anyone turns pro early. Losing Seniors Buske, Handran and Nohelty will hurt some but if we lose McCallum & Decker early too that would really hurt.

Dumb question, but what happens to the Gopher Baseball team's chances once Target Field is built? Are they going to still be able to play early season games at the Dome?

The Minnesota volleyball team was ranked No. 8 in the Volleyball Magazine Preseason poll.

Minnesota finished No. 14 in last year's final AVCA Top 25 poll, and was ranked as high as No. 8 during the regular season.

Joining the Gophers in the top 10 in order were Penn State, Texas, Nebraska, Washington, Stanford, Cal, Hawai'i, Florida and UCLA.

Minnesota was the second-highest ranked Big Ten team behind No. 1 Penn State. Illinois and Michigan were in the poll at No. 13 and 15 respectively. Purdue and Wisconsin also received votes.

Golden Gophers non-conference opponents that appeared in the poll included No. 3 Nebraska, No. 4 Washington, No. 11 Iowa State and No. 14 Oregon.

Alvarez: Big Ten to push for 12th team

Didn't know where else to put this story...

Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez says the Big Ten will soon make a more aggressive push toward adding a 12th member.

Speaking to Wisconsin's athletic board on Friday, Alvarez, the former longtime Badgers football coach, said the conference already has investigated possibilities for expansion "from all over the country." And though he places no timetable on the search, Alvarez thinks conference commissioner Jim Delany will respond to a group of athletic directors and coaches who want expansion.

Penn State football coach Joe Paterno has been the most vocal advocate of a 12th Big Ten team, and he has support from several of his fellow coaches.

A 12th team would allow the Big Ten to split into divisions and hold a conference championship game. The Big Ten typically ends its football season two weeks before the other BCS conferences, though the addition of a permanent bye week in 2010 will shrink the gap by a week.

No secret the Big 10 wants a 12th team and no secret they want it to be Notre Dame. But, understandably so, Notre Dame doesn't want to give up their great independent TV contract, revenue and licensing deals, etc.

Funny, they'll join the conference for all but football, I'm glad the Big 10 won't accept that. I don't even know what other independents are out there to consider seriously.

Speaking of ND and their TV contract, how does the annoucement of the (possible?/probable?) NBC/Comcast merger afffect their contract? I've also heard that ND makes less than BigT11/SEC schools revenue-wise with this deal, and that they merely do it for exposure? Maybe I should've put this in the 'dumb question' thread. :D

I'm more concerned about what the NBC/Comcast deal means for those of us who have other cable/satellite providers. DirecTV and Comcast are already at odds over Versus. You hope they won't hold other providers hostage over a major network knowing what the backlash would be, but it is Comcast.

Back to ND, I think their licensing deals are what the most care about. As far as TV, they're on a major network 6-7 times a season guaranteed. No other team can say that. So yes, I think more than money the exposure is important. Given the state of the program now, they'd be on ESPN2 or Big Ten Network every week in our conference.

You know if we get a 12th team and two divisions we'll somehow get screwed right? Our division will be:
Ohio State
Michigan
Wisconsin/Iowa
Penn State
Notre Dame
Minnesota

That would be impossible given the current locations:
Image
My guess ~
West - Minny, Iowa, Sconnie, NW, Illinois, Purdue
East - PSU, tOSU, IU, MSU, ND, Ugly Helmets

I never thought ND would even think about joining a conference, but if they maintain their current track, soon they'll be nothing more than a poor man's Stanford of the Midwest.

In a perfect world, I'd drop PSU and add Iowa State. That way a) less travel, b) we can put ISU in the West and move Purdue to the East, c) we can pound on ISU year in and year out, d) yet another reason to hate on Iowa :D Will never happen, I know...but still fun to throw out scenarios.
