He can't make FGs consistently at 45 yards anymore. His leg strength has diminished quite a bit. He'll probably catch on with somebody near the end of camp or mid-season if/when a kicker gets hurt or develops the shanks.

I could see Longwell being added after an early season injury/bust. He's never going to be a kickoff guy but last season for FGs was the exception for him.

Chris Kluwe goes off on a politician, via letter. It's on Deadspin. I won't link it because there are bad words in the link. It's pretty awesome though.

And Kluwe will be on KARE11 news tonight, concerning the letter.

I lost some respect for Drew Brees in this whole bounty situation. I mean, it get it, it's not like I expected him to come out and dog his coaches and players when he probably knew damn well what was going on too. But I've grown a little tired of him using his popularity to play the mouthpiece in the argument at times and come out acting like they're the victims and "justice has been served". He'd do better with me (not that he would care) to have keep his mouth shut and said something cliche like "that's for the league/courts and decide and I'm just focused on playing football."

Lighten up on Brees, I mean he also had the stress of contract negotiations this off-season. I mean now knowing where your next meal is coming from would frustrate any man. Then not knowing when your teammates could be back playing. Any man would snap

In truth though, Brees really should have just shut and gone with the cliched response you mentioned. I would have enjoyed seeing the suspensions upheld. I didn't like the statement I heard, don't know if it was just someone talking or from the NFL, that in order to suspend players in these situations there has to be evidence from the NFL of the "intent to injury". If they, or any player, put money into a system to pay for the ATTEMPT of injury to a player to me that is intent if not from them laying a hit but from them paying a player to trying to injury.

I'm pretty sure there have been a few 0 QB ratings. IIRC, Trent Dilfer and Rex Grossman are two of a handful of QBs to post a 0.

There are a lot of absolutely hilarious stat lines in that list. Including QBs who have gotten wins with a zero rating. Warren Moon having two zero passer rating games is another.

I was thinking about kicking earlier this year. I wish fantasy websites would take field goal yardage and divide by ten for the points. (Also, I'm a fan of fractional points.)

What a great day in the NFL:

1) I get to see a great game (from an entertainment perspective) from the Vikings--and they won.
2) I come home from a long bike ride to see the last 30 seconds of the Packers loss.
3) I get to watch my boy Peyton Manning tonight.

I have no idea what you're talking about if it's an actual play from today - I am referring to in general that a player can get a penalty for taking his helmet off on the field or for excessive celebrating but not for jumping into the stands.

One of the San Francisco players who sacked Aaron Rodgers had his helmet fly off after the hit, and the referees called an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on him despite the fact that he was not doing it for celebration purposes. It was a completely terrible call.

I don't think you can just throw off your helmet. And no it didn't just come off, it was loose and then he sorta just threw it off. Nothing prevents him from simply putting it back on...

That being said the referees literally got everything wrong that game. Even as a Packers fan I have to laugh at that missed block in the back that allowed Cobb to score.

And not to pile on to the high school referees that are clearly in over their heads but the refs completely f'd the call in Arizona that gave Seattle an extra timeout. And then missed a blatant pass interference call on the next play where the guy never turned around to challenge the ball.

These refs are no better in the night game. A missed 12-men penalty and a timeout to Pitt well after the play clock had expired and a delay. I get these are D2 NCAA refs, but I don't think the basic rules are different. 12 is still 12 right?! 0 is still 0?

I think the helmet thing was a bit of a joke call. I agree with Slap Shot about the whole thing. You can go jump in the stands like a douche bag but a guy can't remove his helmet after a play? Just seems a little inconsistent to me.

I can sort of see why the penalty was called but I think it should have been let go. It was certainly knocked loose on the tackle on Rodgers and I do think his intention was to fully take it off and put it back on in a normal fashion... but he got a little too caught up in the emotion as he tried to grasp it and I can see how the ref could think he flung it.

The refs in that game did make their share of mistakes but I thought a number of the calls I saw the Packer sideline whining about were actually good calls. They complained about being call for hands to the face and the replays showed it was a good call, they correctly called Jones for the push off, Jennings was whining about interference on a short pass when the LB simply had a great angle, etc. There were mistakes in that game but not nearly as much as the bellyaching from the Packer sideline acted like.

The speed of the game is totally different. Plus the environment and fans take the stress all the way to 11. Then there's the expectations of the fans. Now, add in the dozen cameras to catch all of the mistakes only to be replayed by the commentators over and over pretending they could do a better job. And finally, the scrutiny by the fans has been taken to 11 because of the coverage they have been getting.

I'm cutting these refs as much slack as they need.

I watched as much football as you could today and I think the refs did a good job. Sure there were mistakes, but the regular officials made plenty of mistakes as well. The regular officials just don't have the microscope on them all game like these ones do. Joe Buck and Troy Aikman were especially horrible. Every call was highly scrutinized, even if they were the correct ones. If there wasn't so much attention on the officials, it would be a non-story.

For the most part the calls were good. However the bad ones were SO bad, and affected the game greatly (at the point of the call), and were basic calls to begin with....that's the problem. I mean, no block in the back, a 4th TO, etc? You have to be kidding me.

A little bit north of Milwaukee. I live near the cities now though and definitely don't want to live in that state anymore. I think I got that right as well :D

Not arguing with the actual rule itself, I just think technically that interpretation of said stupid rule was correct. That being said I'd probably look the other way on that if I was reffing the game.

The push off though, c'mon. The 9ers were guilty of pass interference IDK how many times on that drive and even before that and there were no calls. And then they decide to call it on the offense there. Ridiculous.

Harbaugh was about to have an aneurysm so let's not act like one side was doing all the bellyaching

That being said the refs weren't the reason we lost. Having the exact same issues as last year is the reason we lost.

The refs ALMOST blow a false start call. They initially said, "penalty declined" (Ben was sacked), then corrected themselves.

But they got it right. When you have a coach and nearly a dozen players screaming "DECLINE" then sometimes you might have a brain fart. What about the coaches and players who were yelling decline?

This is a perfect example. It's a non-issue. They got the call right. It took a few extra seconds, but it was figured out. Even John Fox didn't know why they didn't allow the sack until the ref had to explain it to him. Over-reactions like this are unnecessary and undeserved.

Rube makes a good point on that 4th timeout call. There weren't any calls in the packer game that were as bad as that one but the block in the back was close as were a few others.

In response to DX, I ref hockey and soccer so I know how hard it is. It's hard to get every call right and be 100% consistent at all times. That being said these guys are getting paid a lot more than me and I expect them not to be completely inept. I can see missing some pass interference calls or w/e but when you call it tight to start out and then literally let people hang on the receivers it's kind of hard to stomach. And like I said there were bigger issues than that.

Yes, I understand missed calls due to the speed of the game. There were calls today I disagreed with, but it happens. I get that. No problem. But when they almost miss such a basic call, despite them getting it right in the end.....there should have been no hesitation to begin with. THAT'S the problem I have.

Full disclosure: I reffed soccer for many years at varying levels of competition up through the state tournament finals at varying ages. The better the players are, the harder it becomes to do your job. U18 (and older age groups) were especially difficult. I have a great deal of respect for the replacement refs. They have an impossible job to do with minimal training. Regular refs have years of learning before they are ready to put on the mic and explain the calls to the millions watching at home.

They are trying to gain an edge. It's on the refs to know the rule to begin with. It's not like that was an NFL-only rule. It's a basic football rule. Dead ball foul. Play never happened.

Seriously?

The players and coaches don't get the option of complaining about the refs only to try and deceive them.

But when they almost miss such a basic call, despite them getting it right in the end.....there should have been no hesitation to begin with. THAT'S the problem I have.

What about the players and coaches barking at them to decline?

They are trying to gain an edge. It's on the refs to know the rule to begin with. It's not like that was an NFL-only rule. It's a basic football rule. Dead ball foul. Play never happened.

Seriously?

The players and coaches don't get the option of complaining about the refs only to try and deceive them.

Yes, seriously. The coaches/players can yell and argue all they want. The rule is the rule, and the refs should know that.

Double standard. And a bad one at that.

Sorry, these refs are doing just fine given the situation.

For the record, they got the personal fouls right (helmet to hit, facemask). The former, since it's open to heavy interpretation, was a great call.
Double standard?! You have to be kidding me. Coaches have to just simply say, "That's the way the ball bounces" and not try to sway the refs?! That's hilarious.

You don't get to bitch about the refs and then attempt to deceive them. That's a textbook double standard.

Um, that's sports. I'm not saying that what the coaches are doing is right, but that's their choice to do it. The refs need to do their jobs, and ref. If a ref messes up, or almost messes up, such a basic call, I'm going to call them out on it. The false start (which made this discussion really blow up) is such a basic cut-and-dried rule, there should have been NO hesitation by the refs in calling it and making a ruling. The fact that it took a bit to get it right was what I had a problem with.
