My Hockey Jersey of the Day blog, Third String Goalie

Postby JeffB » Fri 5/29/09 2:43 pm

Hey everyone, I just wanted to let you know about my Hockey Jersey of the Day blog, Third String Goalie.

I've been doing it now for three weeks, featuring a jersey from my collection that is relevant to some sort of event in hockey history that day, with a bit of reaction to the day's news and usually some relevant video clips for both as well.

It can be found at http://thirdstringgoalie.blogspot.com

Since I am a Minnesotan, as time goes by you can expect to see a disproportionately large number of Wild, North Stars, Gopher and other WCHA jerseys.

I hope you like it!

Thanks,
Jeff

My entry for today was eventually posted about 10 hours later than normal. I was out of town at Wrigley Field all weekend and didn't get today's fully completed before leaving town, but it's there now if you checked earlier today and didn't see it.

Today I featured my first Gophers jersey from my collection.

It's a 1998-99 University of Minnesota Golden Gophers Alternate John Pohl jersey. It's one of the more unique and unusual designs the Gophers have ever worn.

There's also a small selection of Johnny Pohl videos at the end.

I featured a North Stars Brian Bellows jersey with the John Mariucci memorial patch today, so there's some videos at the end from YouTube that I've linked to about the old and new Mariucci Arena's, plus a link to his bio on Vintage Hockey Minnesota and Greatest Hockey Legends.com. You can access those by clicking on his name in my blog post.

Today's entry is Gopher related once more and in honor of Jordan Leopold, whose birthday is today.

Very cool site. That is some jersey collection you have. In your "want list" section you mention the Blue Slovenia jersey. I would love to know if you find a place to get one. I had wanted one for a long time, and ended up going to Slovenia to get one - well not really to get a jersey - but it was a bonus of the trip. The one I could find was white, but I would have preferred the blue. Good luck and once again, nice work!
President Bush said, "And it seems like Minnesota is pretty good at hockey, too."

"I think in the best interest of his career, he definitely would benefit from playing one more year of college," Gretzky said.

Of interest to Gopher fans, the featured jersey today is a 1958-59 Herb Brooks Gopher jersey, as today is Brooks' birthdate.

What were they thinking when they picked those "Star Trek" numbers? The state patch on the back with the players hometown listed is a unique feature. In a way, these were ahead of their time with the vertical striping that Reebok seems to love so much for the new NHL jerseys.

Call me weird, but I liked these. But what were they thinking by lining the thing with felt??? I also loved the third jersey that Casey Hankinson designed that they wore for a game in 97-98.

Was that the plan going into it? The Hankinson jersey was worn for just a single game?

From what I understand it was going to be your typical alt jersy, worn every once and a while, but no one liked it. It does really deviate from the traditional look that Gopher jerseys have always had so I can understand why it was shelved as quickly as it was. I'm actually suprised that they were able to wear it at all. Could be that the powers that be had no idea about it and freaked after the fact.

There was another version of the jersey where the "M" was on each shoulder and that angry gopher head was on the front, but much larger. I liked that version better.

Hey, I forgot to mention that I featured a 1969-70 Mike Antonovich Gophers jersey on my blog last Saturday

http://thirdstringgoalie.blogspot.com/2 ... olden.html

and a 2004-05 Ryan Potulny Gophers alternate jersey back in early September.

I'd appreciate it if everyone would take a little time and read my blog today. It's a special post and it would mean a lot to me of you were to read it.

It's about former Wild player Sergei Zholtok.

Thanks,
Jeff

Today is the six month anniversary of Third String Goalie and we are profiling our favorite player, Arturs Irbe, who has one heck of a story to tell. Not many other athletes have risked their careers, and lives, to man barricades against Soviet tanks in defense of their homeland.

Plus, we let you in on our favorite freebie at the end of today's entry.

Don't mean to hijack your thread, but I saw this link and thought of you.

5 best and 5 worst NHL jerseys of the decade.

http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_d ... nhl,200390

This almost became the Blues 3rd jersey buy Mike Keenan banned the team from wearing it.

Hey, I'm pleased you thought of me.

I completely forgot to mention this here earlier, but speaking of Worst Jerseys Lists...

Now that The Hockey News Greatest Jerseys of All Time special edition issue has (finally) come out, it's time for me to invite you to check out page 58 where my article on the "Curious, Weird and Ugly Collection" begins. It runs five pages long and is essentially a "Top Ten Worst Jerseys" list, although there are some I'm actually fond of. There's also a sidebar giving some background on who I am, which mentions my blog, Third String Goalie, which will hopefully drive some serious traffic my way. :)

When I heard they were looking for submissions from rec league teams who had made their own jerseys, I took the opportunity to email them and point them toward my blog, perhaps hoping for a mention on their website in some way to gain a few hits. To my shock, they wrote me back later the same day, saying they wanted to interview me for the issue and then had the idea for me to write and article for it. ME! I was blown away that the bible of hockey wanted me to write for them! :o

Aside from my contribution, it's an awesome magazine with a wide variety of articles and highly recommended reading for everyone on this board. It's available at Barnes & Noble and Borders.
