Duluth Roadtrip '10 (Gophers vs. Duluth @tDecc)

Postby SouthTexGopher » Wed 9/02/09 10:35 pm

Per FHG's FB event, we're looking at an invasion of Duluth in February 2010. Since I'm flying up from the other end of I-35, I could use some logistical support as we plan this thing. What's the hotel of choice? Bar of choice? Anyone want to split a car?
Where's the $18k?

FHG's the king of this trip, but most Gopher fans stay at the Comfort Suites in Canal Park, which is a short stumble from all of the bars in that area.

I've stayed at the Comfort Suites each time for this particular roadtrip, I've always been happy with the place. Some other ones that are down in Canal Park....and close to the bars are; The Inn on Lake Superior, Hampton Inn, Canal Park Lodge. The Hawthorne Suites are pretty nice too if you're coming with a group. The South Pier Inn is right across the lift bridge but is pretty spendy. The Holiday Inn is across the freeway and a bit of a walk at bar close....especially in the dead of winter, but it's a pretty nice motel as well, I think that is where the team stays. The Best Western Downtown is right behind the Holiday Inn but only use that as a last resort.....it's a DUMP!!!!

Bar of choice is easy, GRANDMAS SPORTS GARDEN. It's for sure the after game location to be if you're a Gopher fan. Grandmas Saloon right across the street is a fun place too, if you go upstairs at least, the downstairs has a bar but it's mainly just a restaurant. There is Old Chicago, Timber Lodge Steakhouse, Green Mill, Red Lobster, Little Angies and a few others I'm probably forgetting right in Canal Park too that have a bar and of course some grub to soak up the booze. If you stay at the Holiday Inn they have Sneakers thats located in the motel-mall area that is a pretty fun place. And of course let's not forget about the Club Saratoga, Duluths FINEST jazz club and STRIP CLUB!!! :D

STG if you have any other questions either ask on here or on Facebook.

(I think this is the 2nd Duluth roadtrip in a row now that I haven't been the one to start the thread.....I must be slipping!)

Al,
The group I go with (8-12 typically) gets a suite at the Hawthorne and we've always been happy. Right in the thick of things and no long walks required. A hot breakfast in the lobby each morning is included.

Thanks for the tips, guys. I'm counting on the bonus coming through this year...we'll find out soon. If so, the trip is a LOCK. Looking forward to meeting a bunch of GPLers.

C-Dog, if you show up, I'm buying you a beer.

Well I hope to meet the southtexgopher as well, but chances are good I won't be up for my first gopher series since 1999. Twins are due 2 weeks before hand. 8)

11 words for you, DHG......

Drop them off with the grandparents and get your drunk on!!! :) Thats what grandparents are for, glorified babysitters!!!!

Sure would not be the same being up for the Gophers vs. UMD weekend and not seeing DHG getting into verbal arguments with opposing fans.

Yeah, that is what you do with new borns that are a month old!

That really isn't my worry. I am more worried if they are born premature and only weigh about 3 lbs they will be in the hospital for a month or so. If that is the case I am not leaving them in the cities to go to the game.

I'm too lazy to go back and read if this has already been discussed...
Does anyone know if tickets are still available? Ticketmaster is saying they're not on sale yet. Do you just have to mail in the order form?
It's been a while since I made the trip...would love to make a game in Duluth next year.

They aren't on sale until Sept. 28th. Your best bet is to call the DECC. Waaaaay better seat availability that TicketBastard, and you avoid those BS fees.

I'm thinking everyone that got their tickets already sent in the order form like I did. I got mine on Friday.

I'm still a bit confused. I thought the poster above said they went on sale on the 28th. Did they already go on sale?

There were order forms that could be mailed in to the ticket office on the tUMD athletics website. I would assume they sent out the tickets already that were ordered via the mail in form and the rest will go on sale tommorow I guess. Not sure what to tell you.

I am glad I mailed in my order.

Two ticket to both nights

By Mail:
Ticket Price $25.00 x 4
Handling Fee $3.00
TOTAL $103.00

By Ticket Bastard:
Ticket Price $25.00 x 4
Facility Charge $2.00 x 4
Convenience Charge $3.75 x 4
Additional Taxes $0.29 x 4
TOTAL $124.16

Difference of $21.16 due to ticket bastard "fees" and "taxes".

My wife and I have been staying at The Suites Hotel at Waterfront Plaza the last couple of times and the location is great (I believe it used to be the Hawthorne). It is attached to Old Chicago and close to the Sports Garden. The rooms are ok, pretty spacious, but in need of some refurnishing. There is a pretty solid breakfast which is nice. The big thing is picking a place in canal park.
President Bush said, "And it seems like Minnesota is pretty good at hockey, too."

"I think in the best interest of his career, he definitely would benefit from playing one more year of college," Gretzky said.

Definitely excited for this trip. It's going to be the first real roadtrip for me for gopher hockey. We went down to Mankato for the third game of the opening round last year but that hardly counts as a roadtrip. I hope to meet some fellow GPLers while I'm up there.

My sister called me last night and said their group somehow got 5 tickets for both nights all together, she was pretty surprised.

Is it February yet?

FHG, what is your experience with scalping tickets up at the DECC? Are there tickets available usually? Any idea on how much they run?

Great question! I haven't purchased tickets yet, since I'm not sure what the work situation will be (that is, IF there will be a work situation). I'm planning to go if everything turns out, but I'll need to score some tickets once I get to Duluth.
Where's the $18k?

I can't really answer that, I've always been lucky enough to have tickets before hand. I guess the best thing I could say is hang around the Sports Garden before the games as there are usually a few people that seem to have some tickets to get rid of. Or just put on the board a few days ahead of the weekend what you're looking for and people will keep an eye out. Maybe DHG can chime in on this as well, if there is a good spot to hang out at the DECC before the games to find tickets.

Keep your eyes out on Craigslist as well... I was able to score tickets a couple of years back from someone looking to off- load some tickets for the series at the DECC. You probably will want to check it in mid-February

Keith, did Mike get tickets or is he just going to stay at the bar?

I think he's just sitting at the bar, didn't sound like he had any interest in going to the games. He's coming up with a couple other friends of ours as well so I think they were just planning on sitting at a bar and watching.

Hey all,
Our group was able to get tickets for Friday night, but struck out on Saturday. Can someone tell me what the story is with the Standing Room Only areas of the DECC that show up on the Venue Map? Are those areas sold ahead of time or is that a rush type situation? If you have a single somehwere else in the arena, are you allowed to stand there?

Seems like there's still singles left for Sat, so we were thinking of trying to have a ticketsucker operator help us in getting singles relatively close to each other...but then possibly standing together if there was room and a decent vantage point. I was just wondering what the SRO situation is there and if that'd be another option?

thanks. Can't wait to see the old DECC before it goes.

Not sure how the admittance to SRO goes or when they go on sale but our group of 12 has seats in Section S which is next to a SRO section so if you choose to go that route you will at least have some friendly faces around.

after a short hiatus from the board- I'll be making the trip with tColonel this year - staying at the Hawthrone suites. Sharing a suite with the parents, but hopefully there will be a hot tub in the living room again for a nice saturday morning soak to wash the long island "frazee" tea damage off of my skin from too many pitchers at tSportsGaden

Sunday morning - breakfast at hell's kitchen fo' show!

also - STG - if this is your first time up - make sure that in between periods you sprint down to the curling club to slam a couple quick beers to keep the buzz going! I think you have to pay a ceremonial 1 dollar donation to become a member for the day but it's totally worth it!

I was hoping to make the trip, but I don't have tickets or a hotel yet. Plus, I'm already going to Mankato and Houghton and I'm off the following Wednesday through the next week for some time off and the State Hockey Tourney.
