Hunger Games was OK. I hadn't read the book so I went to it with no preconceived notions. I'd give it a 7 out of 10 score.

I thought they did a very good, not great job with the movie. Some of the special effects were lacking, but that's to be expected with it being a Lionsgate film. Lionsgate's claim to fame is the "Saw" series if that tells you anything.

To your point you made on Twitter about wanting more strategy on the game itself, I agree. The problem is that the book is a first person narrative where she does go in depth about why things happen which she knows from watching all the previous games. I was concerned how they were going to explain a lot of the stuff because there isn't a lot of dialogue. They created the game center which helped out immensely, but still left out a lot of the actual strategy she goes over in her head in the book.

Entirely unimpressed with the Hunger Games movie. I DEFINITELY recommend reading the books--they are incredibly readable and enjoyable.

Problems with the movie:

1) Needed to be rated R. I understand the audience is teens/"young adults", but the subject matter is not really "young adult" in nature. You need to SEE the deaths (i.e. the first minute of the actual games was useless--particularly with the shaky cam that made me dizzy and not want to actually watch). Which leads me into the second point...
2) I had NO investment in the other tributes. In the book, you learn about the tributes, and their characters are developed to an acceptable level, and when they die, you FEEL the tension of wanting them to die versus feeling awful for wanting them to die (hence, the entire underlying principle of the books).
3) There was nothing added in the visual representation. Lord of the Rings, for example, made things epic and grand and visually stunning, along with an unforgettable soundtrack and acting. Hunger Games, however, had no grand scale, DECENT acting, and a soundtrack I don't even remember in the least.
4) Casting and representation of the secondary characters was pretty subpar. Haymitch is supposed to be a DRUNK. I think I saw him drinking once the entire movie--in fact, they portray him as entirely helpful nearly the entire time!
5) Not only was I not convinced of the emotions any of the characters felt (except Jennifer Lawrence--she continues to climb the list of incredibly talented young actresses... If you haven't seen Winter's Bone, do it), it wasn't all that entertaining in the end.

There are a number of other problems I had with the movie... These are just a few.

End rant. I'm just pissed the movie was so disappointing after I enjoyed the books so much.

Raging Bull 2 is now being cast.

I also read over the weekend that Triplets is being cast. It is a sequel to Twins and will have Arnold, Danny Devito, and Eddie Murphy as triplets.

Interesting discussion we just had at work...Has anyone ever walked out of a movie because it was so bad?

The only movie I have ever walked out on was Exit to Eden. I came REALLY close to walking out on Robocop 2.

Walked out of "All the King's Men" with Sean Penn and Jude Law. It was awful and I do not regret walking out. Almost walked out of "Boondock Saints 2" but for some reason I liked torture on that day and stayed with it.

Walked out of Dead Ringers. But I worked at the theater at the time so wasn't like it was losing money.

WANTED to walk out of a screening of a Japanese film...something like "Three...Extremes". The 1st one was about a woman making "fountain of youth" dumplings out of baby fetuses. But a certain poster (who has been MIA for a LONG TIME) wanted to sit thru it. Thankfully, the 2 other shorts of the movie were better. That was a free screening, too, though.

If I PAID to see it, I'd probably sit thru it no matter what...but then again, if I paid to see it, it must've gotten my attention enough to want to see it to begin with. So can't really see myself ever walking out of a movie I paid to see.

Who's been to a movie by themselves? I never have, but being married with two small children makes it nearly impossible to go to anything but cartoon movies. My only option may be to go by myself...I've always thought you'd look so silly at a movie by yourself though...

I've did it before. when a movie I want to see has been released, and I want to see it on the big screen.

I've never went at night. It's always been during the day time. I liked it, hardly no one there, and you'd be surprised how many people in the theater were there by themselves..

The first time I did it, I felt like a schmook, but then I just didn't care, and found it relaxing :good2:

I used to go by myself all the time. You don't have anyone to coordinates schedules and movie tastes with, don't have to decide which flavor of pop, can put as much 'butter' on the popcorn as you want, etc. I especially like going on budget nights. The 1st time, yeah, felt kinda dumb...but then you realize there are a lot of people that go by themselves. And it's not like I've ever looked at someone and thought, "what a loser...they're there by themselves" (unless there's a VERY OBVIOUS physical trait that might explain why they're alone...lol). It's not a big deal. Not like you can talk to someone anyway. And it's nice sometimes to just treat yourself to a night off/out without having to please someone else. :)

I did once. I was in the Atlanta suburbs on a work trip. I was by myself and had several evenings to kill. I still remember the movie (Varsity Blues). Once the movie starts, you don't even really notice you're alone.

What I find far more awkward is eating in a restaurant alone (especially a sit-down place). I travel a few times a year for work. 4-5 day stretches at a time...usually solo. I try to bring a newspaper or book while I eat, or else I feel incredibly self-conscious.

I'll go to movies by myself (although I am a sort of recent convert), and yeah, it's during the day. I hate crowds in theaters because there is always one jackbag who talks/has cellphone/etc. For the record, though, I maybe see one movie a year in the theater: it has to be something that needs to be seen on the big screen (ex: 300, Matrix) or something that is so hyped/whatever that if I don't see it I will know all about the movie and lose my desire to see it because I know what happens (Dark Knight, The Departed, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo).

Until Netflix there was never a movie I stopped watching. Even "Mars Attacks," where I started playing solitaire in the middle of it, but left it on just in case there was some redeeming factor. Nope.

Since then, two movies stand out that I had to stop watching them: "Buffalo '66" I stopped watching 30 minutes in, and "Tropic Thunder" about 45 minutes in. Horrid movies with no redeeming qualities. Like you, I was actually angered by those movies. (although of what I saw, they were both better than Mars Attacks).

Film walked out on: Eraserhead! God, to this day even the memory annoys me. It holds the "honor"?? of being the only film I have ever left.
Alone at a film: EVERY WEEK! I see at least a film a week and 99% of the time I go alone during the day. I treat myself to a Kiddie Combo Pack and settle back. Spouse only wants to see a limited type of film so I go alone. Doesn't bother me at all.

I've never gone to a movie by myself but I have a lot of friends who have done it. I usually have a buddy who will go with me for almost every movie I want to see so I don't usually have to, but I would if necessary. I think it wuold be kinda nice to just go in and see a movie alone sometimes.

I've never walked out of a movie that I've gone to, although I've definitely wished I had. I usually figure that since I paid for the movie I'm going to sit through it no matter how hard it sucks.

A Dangerous Method: It was okay, but after the first 5 minutes or so (which was amazing), Keira Knightley's acting was either brilliant or grating. It was like flipping a coin every minute.

In The Land Of Blood And Honey: totally meh. Nothing horrible or great about it. I guess the only thing I could say was that the movie didn't gloss over some parts of the story, and those parts were rather raw/blunt/frank.

Before The Devil Knows You're Dead: don't even bother.

I liked Before The Devil Knows You're Dead. I thought it was a good story, excellent filming (liked the retrospective), great acting and I got to see Marisa Tomei's smokin hot bod :good2: I'd give it a 7+, which I rarely do.

I was expecting a good, if not great, movie due to the actors/Marisa, but man, it was bad. The characters were face value, the storyline was predictable, and if you wanna see Marisa's bod, just watch "The Wrestler" which is a much much better movie. I swear her job in "Devil" was stand there topless and whine.

No prob. Even watching it, it had potential. I just think they didn't flesh out the characters enough to care about them. The basic story was good. The execution of telling the story is where they failed, IMO. :)

Agreed. I felt like they were too shallow.

Saw "We Bought a Zoo" yesterday--above average, sentimental, but again, no strong character development. From what I read, it's based on a true story, but seemed to SIGNIFICANTLY deviate from the real story...

Let me guess...in the real story, Matt Damon wasn't the actual person who ran the zoo?

Saw "Cabin in the Woods" the other day. I couldn't decide if it was trying to be an actual horror movie or a spoof on horror movies. Either way, it was a pretty good story and concept up until the last 5 minutes. It just turned awful and downright lazy with the ending.

Why would anyone have a problem going to a movie by themselves? Because someone you don't even know might think you are a loser? Who cares? That is just strange to me.

On another subject I just read that Vince Vaughn is going to make a movie version of the Rockford Files and play Jim Rockford. Somebody needs to tell Vince Vaughn to please just go away. He was somewhat amusing a decade ago but now he just blows.

Watched "We Bought a Zoo" tonight for family movie night...EXCELLENT family movie!!! I am a Matt Damon fan anyway, but to see him in this movie was great. I am a sucker for feel good movies and this one is a top of the stack. I definitely recommend it if you like that kind of movie.

I go to movies by myself...when the AMC had $5 movies at night I would go to the Roseville one, buy either some Chipotle or Potbellys and bring in a flask. Nice cheap way to spend an evening. Hell, if you time it right you can see two movies. (that is how I saw Inception for free)

I have walked out of two movies...when I was a kid I walked out of Arachnophobia and a few years back I walked out of Miami Vice. There have been plenty of movies I wish I had though but I usually stayed either to laugh or to make sure I never allow myself to see that dreck again.
If you disagree with me, that is aok by me :) :dup:

I just mentioned to 'dillo that Nolan and Aronofsky are my top two current (regular*) directors. Nolan keeps things so close to the sleeve that he completely blows you away when he presents his work, while Aronofsky just messes with your head. I'm pumped.

*Sure, you have Spielberg and Scorcese, but they usually don't take chances. They do their thing, which is usually great, but the aformentioned Darren/Chris stick their neck out a little.

It was your typical American Pie-style movie. Good way to wrap up the series IMHO. Some funny lines/scenes but nothing gut-bustingly funny.

Blame Burton on this one.

Honestly, Depp could be considered close to Daniel Day-Lewis, but he takes on too many odd roles. He was awesome in Donnie Brasco, the first Pirates movie (I've only seen the first one), Public Enemies, Blow, and Once Upon A Time In Mexico.

If he was more particular, maybe you'd change your opinion? :)

I don't mean this to sound snarky or condescending, it's just like watching an all star baseball player swinging at everything, when you know he could show more discipline.

The Avengers was awesome. I went to the midnight showing last night. If you're a fan of the super hero movies it's a must see.

A couple movies I'm excited for are The Dictator, obviously I don't expect it to be a great movie but Sacha Baron Cohen movies never fail for a good laugh. The other one I'm really excited for is the Bourne Legacy in August. Huge fan of the Bourne movies

Another movie I'm going to see for sure is Memorial Day. It was filmed 95% in Minnesota and 95% of the actors are from Minnesota to, according to the movie theater in East Grand Forks. The director is from close to East Grand Forks. Looks like it should be a decent indie film.
