Went fishing with a couple of my uncles last week down by Mankato. Driving into Le Center, there is a huge sign that reads: "Le Center, Minnesota: Home of the 1982 Class B Football Champions"

Holding onto the past a bit, I guess

Not so much a simple pleasure as it is a goofy idiosyncracy but my personal rule is that I will only purchase college garb in the state in which the school is located. My rule used to be that it had to be purchased at the school but found that really hard to maintain.

So I guess my simple pleasure is purchasing college garb in the state in which the school resides.

For Father's Day my daughter gave me a nicely framed 8x10 photo of the 1974 Gopher Hockey Team gathered around the schools' first National Championship Trophy at Boston Garden. The reason it's so meaningful to me is that I happened to be standing in the crowd right behind the team and am clearly visible in the photo. I don't think I even realized they were taking the picture, we were just celebrating. The picture was on the wall at Mariucci last time I was there.

I've kept in touch with at least 5 people who I consider fairly close friends, but are out of state at school, through Facebook.

Without Facebook I would not have kept in touch with them, and would not have seen them for 3-4 years. That would effectively kill most friendships, but because of FB I feel like we are still going to remain friends when they come back to MN after school!

People can bash FB all they want, but it's an amazing way to stay in touch with people and stay connected :good2:

Sorry I am late to the steak game, but as a general rule of thumb, if there isn't blood on your plate when you are done, you overcooked it. While I understand that many people don't like any color in the center, it truly ruins the meat. First, you have to start with at least a 1 1/2" cut of meat. It has to be put on the grill (only way to cook it) at room temperature and don't over season. Salt and pepper is all that is needed. Don't get cutesy and creative with a chunk of beef. Lately I have been really into New York strips, don't like them as part of a t-bone, but by themselves, they are incredible. Ribeye is too fatty for me right now and top sirloin, even though the taste is great, they are a little tough. Where you buy your beef matters too. Luckily I have the best butcher I have ever been to right across the parking lot from work. Anyway, I turn my grill up as high as I can get it and sear the steak for 1 minute on each side and then turn the grill down to 250 and let it sit for 4-5 minutes on each side. Let it rest for 5 minutes before cutting it open. I have been eating mine with Dijon mustard lately too which I think adds a lot to the taste.

Quick funny story, my entire life I haven't enjoyed steak. I always thought steak was to be cooked like shoe leather. I remember my dad grilling steaks and cutting them open and seeing a little red and putting them back on the grill because my mom didn't like any pink. Same with burgers. When I started goofing around with learning to cook steak, I progressively cooked them less until I can pretty much eat a steak rare now, but then the fat is not grizzle and that isn't good. Anyway, grilling was always my dad's thing so I never asked to cook. Fast forward to the last year, my parents have come over for dinner and I have cooked steak medium rare for them and burgers the same (I told my dad that I refused to ruin the meat so he could put his on longer if he wanted) My mom was absolutely amazed at the taste and finished her entire steak. She said she loved the warm pink center. My dad shook his head and said he thought that his whole life that she didn't like any pink and asked why my mom didn't say anything. She said, "I just thought you didn't know how to cook steak and I didn't want to hurt your feelings!" If that isn't true love, I don't know what is.

These two statements in the same paragraph made me laugh. ;)

I have an aunt that told me that she grew up hating turkey. She couldn't avoid it once when she got older and discovered that she didn't like turkey that was cooked until bone dry. She loves turkey now, just not at her mother's. My mother is the same way as her mother. I was cooking a turkey once and pulled it out. She exclaimed, "It's not done. There is still juice coming out." My wife and I use that line all the time now.

From the right (the Herb side) count over 4 standing players, exclude the suit. I'm between the 4th and 5th player. My shoulders are even with their helmets. I'm wearing a gold MN sweatshirt with the skating gopher on it. Big forehead, dark hair.
5OT, now I see where she bought the photo.
BTW, it was also on the cover of the program for the first game of the next season. I have that in my collection.

The marinade my dad has been using for decades is just splashing a little Worcestershire on the steaks and letting them sit for about 15-30 minutes. Great flavor without destroying the flavor of the beef. Honestly. I also tend to let the steak rest for a bit longer (10 minutes).

Has anyone ever tried aging their beef at home? I remember seeing an episode of Good Eats that gave a few pointers but have not tried it myself. Is that even necessary (or perhaps I should say does it enhance the results any) if buying from a butcher?

That said I myself don't mind very small amounts of salt, pepper, garlic and worcestershire. If done delicately it does not harm the natural flavors and in fact can add to them. But then again I'm also a fan of putting some hickory in tinfoil with water on the side of the coals. Again if done right it doesn't overwhelm the experience but merely adds to it.

If you're buying from a butcher it's probably already been aged. Ours leaves the carcass hang 10 days in the cooler before he cuts it up.

I like Worcestershire too. Penzey's Spices makes one called "Chicago Seasoning." I can't get enough of the stuff...even put it on the high quality steaks. I like it so much I sniff it through rolled up twenties.

Awesome helmets. :dup:

From the right (the Herb side) count over 4 standing players, exclude the suit. I'm between the 4th and 5th player. My shoulders are even with their helmets. I'm wearing a gold MN sweatshirt with the skating gopher on it. Big forehead, dark hair.
5OT, now I see where she bought the photo.
BTW, it was also on the cover of the program for the first game of the next season. I have that in my collection.
And yes, I'm that damn old.

Pretty cool piece of memorabilia. Pretty easy to see you in the zoom image.

Do you know many of the other Gopher fans in that picture? Stay in touch with any of them?

How big of a dump was the Boston Garden?

That works.

I tend to go with kosker salt and cracked pepper half an hour before grilling. Beef purity.

I prefer mine cooked medium well and slathered in ketchup. :poke:

I use either Seasoned Salt or Lawry's Montreal Seasoning.

If you want to be absolutely safe, you need to boil the steak for 20 minutes per pound.

But really, salt, pepper, and occasionally some chili powder work for me.

Only 19 player and 2 coaches.

Same picture today would have twice as many people.

According to http://www.gopherhockeyhistory.com there were 23 players that played at least one varsity game that season. Back then the total number of players on the roster were a lot more than today. The total number of guys listed on the 73-74 roster was 45. They also had a JV back then too.

If you ever find a place that has it or can research how to mix the proportions for maximum taste, then I highly recommend trying lavender salt. We had some on a couple tenderloins when in South America and it's hands down the best seasoning I've ever had on a piece of beef.

5OT, We used to sit in the front of the balcony at Williams Arena next to 2 guys named Bob and Phil. By one of the most bizarre coincidences ever, we got to the game at Boston Garden, our seats were in the front row of the balcony, right beside Bob and Phil. Haven't seen them since '76.
I don't remember much about the Garden except it seemed old, with character. Pretty sure we had wood seats w/backs.

I was going to post in pet peeves about my 1-year-old son's need to throw the dog's food all over the floor, but he spent 20 minutes going all around the kitchen floor putting it all back into the bowl, one piece at a time. Kid has way more and nicer toys than I ever had, and he wants to play with a bowl of dog food.

Recreating a meal you have had while eating out! Recently I have gotten into making my burgers by putting all the ingredients in with the beef (pickles, cheese, bacon, etc) and making the burger that way. I even tried a taco burger using taco seasoning, etc (not the best by the way), but tonight I made what has to be exactly my favorite burger from the place that sponsors my softball team! plain old hamburger grilled, topped with 2 strips of bacon, spicy honey mustard sauce, bleu cheese crumbles and jalapenos! Incredible taste. The bar calls is a St Louis Burger, I call it heaven!

Better than what I did when I was a kid. Apparently I had my cheeks stuffed full of dog food and I had some nasty brownish green drool going on. :)

My buddy told me a funny story the other day. He is a substitute teacher and he is also working a summer program for kids. He said the other day he had a girl in his group wearing a sue shirt. They were lining up to go back into the school building and my buddy stopped her when she got to the front of the line and asked her "Are you allowed to wear that?" and he pointed at her shirt. She got really confused and said "Yeah, I think so. Why wouldn't I?". Some kid in the back of the line yells "Because the sue SUCK!!!".

Sorry I am late to the steak game, but as a general rule of thumb, if there isn't blood on your plate when you are done, you overcooked it.

The red liquid you see on the plate IS NOT BLOOD! Blood comes from veins and arteries, not muscle tissue. It's protein saturated fluid. Maybe this should be in Pet Peeves because it bugs me when my wife complains when she sees even an iota of pink in her steak or burger. She once sent a steak back 3 times at a fancy restaurant in Maui.

Quite a few simple pleasures today.

First, finding the loophole around the stupid "block/filter" mechanism on this apartment complex's computers. Yes, took me long enough.
Second, leaving this apartment complex for good tomorrow.
Third, looking back at old high school track times and realizing that my high school 4x800 team ran the 5th fastest time in state high school history in 2005. The pet peeve: We are down to 15th now. :anger:

My senior year my sprint medley team (200 200 400 800) ran the 3rd fastest time in the country during secitonals. At state our coach decided to swap out the 800 runner and he ran out of gas at about 600 meters with a 10 meter lead and we ended up not even placing. Not only that had we won that relay we would have the team title. :anger:

Unplugging from society for the weekend. Went to a friend's cabin with no phone reception and no TV.

Similar experience in the BWCA a couple weeks ago. Found out society was still there when I got back.

Back during the time of no cell phones and the closest phone was a pay phone in Longville, five miles from our cabin.

Me: Hey dad, why don't we have a phone here at the cabin?

Dad: We come to the cabin to get away from the phone.

My cell phone still doesn't work at the cabin and I refuse to put a phone line in. The neighbors all have phones and some even have DSL.

This is awesome.
