That must have been a sizable raccoon.

Must have been. I hit an armadillo last Thursday in SE Missouri in a rental. No damage at all.

You hit Armadillo?! :ahhh:  :(

And it was on his birthday!!! :biggrin2:

Shopping with my wife at Toys-R-Us for my sons birthday presents. In 45 minutes, I was asked 7 times (my wife 5) if we are finding everything alright and if we'd like any help.

It is a square box with rows of aisles. Each aisle is arranged with some sort of order (pink toys on one end and blue on the other). There are huge signs labeling what is in the aisle. The signs are in english, which I speak. I don't need help!

As much as I would like to support box stores and keep people employed- As much as I like GOOD customer service- The badgering I get at some places (see DirecTV guys at Best Buy) makes me want to shop online.

Verbatim are the TWO accident reports I had to fill out for last week.

Aug 1 12:30 AM: Driving west on Hwy 14 from Pierre to Rapid City, I hit a raccoon. Front quarter panel destroyed.

Aug 3 4:30 AM. Driving south on 1804 from Sutton Bay SD towards Pierre, I hit a raccoon. Front bumper and some undercarriage destroyed.

One report I did not make, but had to sign paperwork on was in relation to the following:

Aug 2 7:30 AM. Replaced drivers side rear tire with spare. Large nail in tire.

Two rental cars. Two accident reports. One blown tire.

Hope your luck turns. As someone who has driven rentals enough to have a few bad things happen, I know the pain it can be going through the process. You are doing the community a service with the raccoon control measures. I have an uncle that does a bit of that - but his method of preference is 12 ga BBB.

People with crabby attitudes...

I work in the produce dept. Watermelons are kind of hit or miss, sometimes one will look good on the outside, but is rather white on the inside. Get a bad one, bring it back in and we'll get a new one, no questions asked. We will even cut it and then wrap it up for you so you can be sure it's a good one before you go. Seems pretty reasonable to me.

Enter angry soccer mom.... She has a bad watermelon and is acting like I had just killed her first born. She had some party to go to and was supposed to bring watermelon. Now I have made her late because she had to make a trip back to the store to get a new watermelon.

I'm sorry that you waited until the last minute to cut up your watermelon

I just don't understand what being all crabby about it accomplishes. Maybe it's because I have worked in the service industry (I'm assuming a grocery store counts as the service industry) for almost 6 years, but whenever I am in a situation like that where I am frustrated about something, I don't take it out on the employee of wherever I am, because it is not their fault.

That's the thing, you almost never see people who actually work(ed) in that type of industry acting like that. Working in the service industry just makes you realize how stupid the average person is (though you do meet some really cool people as well).

This. I overtip in general (I use 20% as my normal, as opposed to 15%). It has to take some realllllllly crappy service for me to undertip. The service industry is a hellish way to make a living. High stress, low wages (generally), etc. Why? I was in that industry for about 5-6 years, as dishwasher, busboy, and cook. I knew I wouldn't have the patience to be a server (see the angry waitress in the movie "Waiting").

Politeness overall has waned, and in the service industry, it has declined quicker, IMO.

Interesting, thanks for the link. As much as I adore Five Easy Pieces that scene always makes me cringe. Not that films making you cringe is a bad thing. And also as someone who worked in the service industry for many years (god, everything from tending bar and all the drunks, to the crappy overnight shift at a coffee shop and all the drunks rolling in at 2 am, hmm I sense a pattern) I can only comment LOUD AND CLEAR...Never f*** with people who handle your food!! :chainsaw:

That is a very good article. Reminds me of an experience I had from back in the day:

A bunch of us played boot hockey every weekend, on Fri/Sat nights, hit Applebee's afterwards for a couple drinks/apps/etc. One night I wanted a shot of Jack and a tall beer. Waitress said that since Applebee's was considered a restaurant and not a bar, she couldn't serve that combo to me at the same time. Thanks to movie wisdom, I pulled a "My Blue Heaven," and said that she could place the beer in front of the guy next to me, and the shot in front of me. Boom, done. (I was polite about it, btw). :dup:

When you have to go do a repair in someones yard and there's so much dog sh*t that you'd have an easier time avoiding IED's in Iraq. Just ridiculous. If you're calling someone to come work in your yard you'd think that you would have the decency to clean all the dog crap up, at least in the area where they will be working.

Or when you go work at someones house and it feels like they're trying to sodomize you they're so close to you the whole time. :pelvic_thrust: :pelvic_thrust2:

This is a really difficult balance IMO. I definitely think there's a line a homeowner is capable of crossing, but when I pay for a service, I definitely have a tendency to want to make sure it's done right, and that requires being in close proximity. The sad reality of home construction is there are a LOT of terrible subcontractors out there who, if they aren't forcibly made to do a good job, won't. If standing over a dude's shoulder while he does housework means I don't have to re-do it the following Saturday, I'm okay with it...

That's one thing, but we do out work outside (sprinkler systems) in the yard and if our fix doesn't work we have to go back and fix it for free immediately. My point is that, when I'm outside I don't need someone damn near pelvic thrusting me when they have a whole yard to watch me do it

Do the rain collectors that are supposed to keep the systems from running when there has been adequate rain really work? What, typically, are the parameters? How do they work? Do they collect rain and let it evaporate? Do they actively drain it?

Thanks, GFG. I cut the 4 conductor wire going to the main ground box. After splicing the wires, I could not get the system to start, either by programming or manual. The rain sensor was over riding the start option. I go that reset, and now things are working. I spliced the 4 conductors using the silicone filled wire nuts, then coated it all with liquid tape. I then wrapped the whole mess w/ electric tape. I would rather not add a new ground box where the splice is because it is a higher traffic spot on the lawn. I know it would probably be better to add one to protect the splice. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

People who are okay with a house falling apart... My roommates pay more than the cost of the rent so the landlord can make money on it, but when it comes to fixing things in the house, nobody cares... Everyone is okay with the house falling apart.

Girl: I want to replace the lock on the bathroom door [since it's broken], but don't know how to fix it...
Me: Isn't that something the landlord should be dealing with? *nods head*
Girl: Well it's a five dollar problem.
Me: Well, I'm guessing people have a good idea that when the light is on and the door is closed, someone is in there... And people usually knock if they're unsure.

I have been traveling a lot recently in North Dakota, Wisconsin and down to Rochseter. I have 2 kids so we stop often for bathroom breaks and meals at restaurants. I cannot believe how bad these places are letting the bathrooms get. More than half of the toilets have dried, or semi dried turds in the bowl or sprayed in the general vacinity of the seat. The sinks are much nastier than my toilet at home.

My son and I have had to become a good team of me holding him 2 feet in the air while he pees towards the toilet. One day, in North Dakota, I debated on having him take a dump on the floor over a paper towel (and I am by no means a germaphobe). I finally decided to take over the women's bathroom and directed all complaints to the staff.

Today I was at a Subway in Brooklyn Park. You know it's bad when you need a key for an inside bathroom. I don't even know how a mess like that can be made. And the fact that the staff have to use that bathroom before making sandwiches....and haven't cleaned it....JFC.

Why not just replace it and pass the receipt along to the landlord and/or deduct from your rent?

1) I have just about no handy household skills. The amount of time it would take to learn how to fix it is well beyond the value (even if it is a one hour fix). I'm busy enough where I already decide between meals and sleep, with Clif bars being a "meal" when I'm only modestly hungry.

2) I personally don't care about the lock itself. Like I said, people probably have a good idea that someone is in there when the light is on and the door is closed (and the fan is on), and if they are unsure, they knock anyway.

3) Best of all: I'm moving out in 1-2 weeks! They can deal with their crappy, rundown, basement-molded, bug-infested house themselves!

Thanks in advance.

Usually just wire nuts are good enough to protect the splice. The boxes are basically just to make things easier to fix if they break because you don't have to dig it up and you know exactly where it is. If your controller stops turning on the sprinklers it's most certainly because of the splice, so as long as you know where you did the splice you should be just fine. Chances are though, that if it's working now it should be good to go.

We usually always put boxes in. The only time we don't is, just like you said, when it would be in a high traffic spot on the lawn.

Yes the rain sensors do work. Usually we set them to turn the system off at either 1/8" or 1/4" of rain. They have little discs in them that expand when they get wet, and when they get wet enough to reach that amount of rain it will flip a switch inside the sensor that will basically shut the electronic current to valves off so the controller can't turn them on. After that it keeps the system off until the discs dry out, which is usually half a day or so.

Thank you. Interesting about the discs in the rain sensors. I did not realize that is how they worked. I am still unsure about the ground box, so I have one on order just in case. Again, thanks for your suggestions.

That's racist!

Well Played, by both of you. I did miss the normal gif.

I don't think I'm always right. I just find it hard to operate on the opposite assumption.

Our new upstairs neighbors are the kind of guys who don't let their suckiness at playing guitar stop them from playing non-stop all day. Honestly, how can you put in that much time and still be stumbling through the same three chords? :ahhh: :ahhh: :ahhh:

Family members and friends of patients in the ER who stand at the doorway or in the hallway and stare at employees...

YOU STANDING THERE DOESN'T MAKE ANYTHING HAPPEN FASTER (and if anything, it will happen slower because you keep pestering the staff about stuff). Seriously, they think because people are chatting and sitting down it means they aren't doing anything. Trust me people, staff want patients in and out of the ER as fast as you do...

This is my current pet peeve.

I'll spare you guys the details but basically, when the girl initiates everything and makes it pretty clear that you're not friend zone material, and then later goes that direction, it can be very confusing and annoying.

Honestly though this is probably for the better and will save me a lot of grief in the future.
<GophDogFan> yep, so sad... you have a new moment, when your uncle gets mad because you got the best of him. the last straw was when i told him that UND's hockey program is like crystal pepsi: Nobody every liked it.

So this one probably belongs in the "This Might Be A Dumb Questions" thread, but if you have the time to watch throughout the entire project and the knowledge to know if it is done correctly or not, how come you don't do it yourself?

Overhead on SiouxSports.com - Why does every thread always turn into a "Gopher" thread? Is there a secret infatuation with them?
